    Abstract: An improved hydrogenation catalyst is provided comprising a high surface area amorphous or gamma alumina support carrying thereon from about 12 to about 20% by weight of nickel, about 1 to about 10% by weight of copper and from 0 to about 1.5% by weight of manganese. This catalyst is used as a second stage catalyst in the two stage hydrogenation of 1,4-butynediol to 1,4-butanediol.
