    Abstract: A process for cladding a surface of a substrate that includes cleaning the surface just prior to applying the cladding. Oxides, such as base metal oxides, are removed from the surface during the step of cleaning. Cleaning methods include an ionized gas cleaning process that may include forming an arc between an electrode and the surface. Optionally, the step of cleaning can occur in a chamber that is substantially evacuated. The cladding can be applied to the cleaned surface immediately after it has been cleaned.
