  • Patent number: 6796297
Abstract: A device for ignition of an internal combustion engine is described, having a computer and an ignition output stage. A current flow through the primary side of an ignition coil is controllable by the ignition output stage. Furthermore, an arrangement is provided for measuring current flow through the primary side. A charge starting point is calculated by the computer, at which the ignition output stage begins to control a current flow through the primary side. The ignition is triggered at a preselected current through the primary side. The instant of triggering is acknowledged to the computer, which takes this instant into consideration in a further, subsequent calculation of a charge starting point.

  • Patent number: 6424155
Abstract: An inductive ignition apparatus for a combustion engine includes a measurement device for ascertaining the ionization current at the spark plug of each cylinder, and includes for each spark plug an ignition coil device which forms the ignition high voltage, operates on the transformer principle, and has a primary and a secondary winding, and through whose secondary winding the ionization current flows. A switch is provided which short-circuits the primary winding for the duration of the ionization current measurement.

Abstract: The invention relates to an inductive ignition apparatus for a combustion engine, having a measurement device for ascertaining the ionization current at the spark plug of each cylinder, and having for each spark plug an ignition coil device which forms the ignition high voltage, operates on the transformer principle, and has a primary and a secondary winding, and through whose secondary winding the ionization current flows. According to the present invention, a switch (S1) is provided which short-circuits the primary winding (L1) for the duration of the ionization current measurement.

  • Patent number: 5821754
Abstract: An ignition system for internal combustion engines, which have means for detecting the secondary voltage transformed to the primary side of an ignition coil, the signal detected by these means being fed to an evaluation device. The evaluation device determines the damping of the voltage signal after the end of sparking, this damping representing a measure for the magnitude of the shunt resistance on the secondary side.

  • Patent number: 5619975
Abstract: A method is proposed for monitoring operations of an internal combustion engine to detect combustion misses for internal combustion engines having dual spark coils. A method is provided for the primary-side monitoring of the spark voltage and/or of the spark duration, and a method is provided for detecting irregular operations. If a faulty ignition is detected in one cylinder at one spark plug by monitoring the spark voltage and/or the spark duration, the second spark plug in this cylinder is then cut off (de-energized) and the reaction to this cut-off is monitored by means of the method for detecting irregular running. If the irregular running detection confirms faulty operation of the internal combustion engine, then the faulty ignition at the first spark plug of a cylinder was correctly recognized and appropriate emergency measures are introduced.

  • Patent number: 5488940
Abstract: An ignition system for internal combustion engines is provided which has a control device (7) for triggering a sequential spark ignition, which measures the primary current (I.sub.p) of each individual ignition of said sequential spark ignition upon the reconnecting of the flow of current, and which compares it with a reference value. The result of this comparison makes predictions possible concerning the conditions in the combustion chamber, and action, e.g. , increasing the primary disconnection current, can be taken by the control device so that for example any shunts which, are present can be eliminated.

  • Patent number: 5462036
Abstract: An ignition system for internal combustion engines with sequential spark ignition is provided which serves to ensure that the last individual spark (EZ) of a sequential spark ignition does not lead to damage to the internal combustion engine, for instance damage caused by ignition during the exhaust stroke. A closing time corresponding to a charging process (AL) for an individual ignition is subtracted from a distribution limit (VG) to obtain a calculated limit (11). Once this limit is reached, the current charging process proceeds unimpeded to trigger the individual ignition, but no new charging process will be started.

  • Patent number: 5446385
Abstract: An ignition system for internal combustion engines serves as a bracket circuit arrangement (10, 11, 12, 16) to limit the primary voltage, in order to protect parts energized with high voltage from being destroyed. The ignition system comprises a voltage bracketing of the ignition transistor (3), the bracketing voltage being variable in dependence upon a secondary-side load. The primary voltage (U.sub.P) is acquired by an evaluation unit (9) and, given a high secondary load, a high bracketing voltage is used and, given a low secondary load, a low bracketing voltage is used.
