  • Patent number: 4451679
Abstract: This invention concerns a process of preparing alcohols and aldehydes which comprises the steps of contacting a mixture of terminal and/or internal olefins and synthesis gas with a catalyst system comprising a ruthenium-containing compound dispersed in a low melting quaternary phosphonium or ammonium base or salt and heating said resultant reaction mixture under a pressure of 100 psi or greater at a temperature of at least 50.degree. C. for a sufficient time to produce said alcohols and aldehydes.

  • Patent number: 4450290
Abstract: A process for the production of alkane acetates from olefins in the presence of a transition metal borate catalyst, oxygen and acetic acid alone via oxidative esterification is described. The reaction is conducted at a temperature in the range of 120.degree. to 220.degree. C. and a pressure of 1 atmosphere or greater. Alkane diacetates and hydroxy acetates are produced which may be used as precursors to alkylene oxides, alkylene glycols and other useful compounds.

    Assignee: Texaco Inc.
Inventors: John R. Sanderson, Lewis W. Watts, Jr., Walter H. Brader, Jr.
  • Patent number: 4440870
Abstract: Novel borate catalyst systems useful for the esterification of olefins are described. The catalyst system is made up of two or more transition metal borates which are co-precipitated. Typical are the zirconyl-cobalt borate, zirconyl-nickel borate and vanadyl-cobalt borate systems.
    Type: Grant

Inventors: John R. Sanderson, Lewis W. Watts, Jr., Walter H. Brader, Jr.
  • Patent number: 4434309
Abstract: A mixture of predominantly low molecular weight alpha olefins may be oligomerized over a boron trifluoride catalyst and a protonic promoter. When the oligomers are hydrogenated they provide a synthetic lubricant base stock having excellent properties. The alpha olefins may be derived from ethylene polymerization or wax pyrolysis. An inert organic solvent may be present. Preferably, the olefin mixture is made up of greater than 50 weight weight percent of at least one low molecular weight alpha olefin having 4 to 6 carbon atoms and less than 50 weight percent of at least one higher molecular weight alpha olefin having 8 to 18 carbon atoms.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 18, 1982
Date of Patent: February 28, 1984
    Assignee: Texaco Inc.
Inventors: John M. Larkin, Walter H. Brader, Jr.
  • Patent number: 4420625
Abstract: A process for the production of alkylene oxides from olefins in the presence of transition metal borate catalysts, oxygen and a non-polar, aromatic organic solvent via one-step, direct oxidation is described. The reaction is conducted at a temperature in the range of 80.degree. to 280.degree. C. and a pressure of 1 atmosphere or greater. Alkylene oxides have a variety of uses such as in polyols for urethane foams, the production of alkylene glycols, surfactants and detergents, alkanolamines, fumigants, synthetic lubricants and elastomers.
