  • Patent number: 8742008
Abstract: A process for forming a new group of siloxane-based compositions by a one-step co-hydrolysis and the compositions formed thereof. The siloxane-based compositions being functionalized with a carbon-carbon double (C?C) bond and a silicon-hydrogen (Si—H) bond. The C?C bond and hydrogen (H) each being attached directly to a silicon (Si) atom of the silicon-oxygen (Si—O) backbone of the siloxane-based composition. The C?C bond may be from a vinyl or an aromatic radical like a phenyl substituent. The C?C bond substituent provides the functionality needed for forming crosslinkages through standard dehydrocoupling catalysts without the need for siloxane fluids or organic compounds containing alkyl or aryl functional groups. The process provides for varying proportions of silanes as starting monomers to tailor the desired silicon, carbon, hydrogen and oxygen ratios in the siloxane-based compositions or resins.

  • Publication number: 20130077731
Abstract: A novel containment system for encapsulating nuclear fuel particles is disclosed. The containment system has a gas-impervious ceramic composite hollow shell having a spheroidal or ovoidal shape. The shell has a pair of longitudinally aligned round openings that are sealed with a gas-impervious ceramic composite tube to define a cavity between the shell inner surface and the tube outer surface. A ceramic composite matrix containing the nuclear fuel particles is enclosed within the cavity. The ceramic composite matrix has a controlled porosity, and can contain moderators or neutron absorbing material. The tube and shell are composed of a ceramic matrix composite material composed of ceramic reinforcement material that is bound together by a polymer-derived ceramic material.

  • Publication number: 20040138046
Abstract: A ceramic composite having a ceramic coating formed from a ceramic forming polymer of adjustable composition. The ceramic forming polymer is capable of producing a weak interface-type fiber coating for the ceramic composite, resists oxidation and is less expensive to apply. The invention also includes methods of using a ceramic forming polymer to provide fiber coatings tailored to the type of matrix, fiber, or other reinforcement used. The material forms micro-porous and nano-porous coatings on the fibers. The porosity in the coatings provides a low strength interface between the fiber and matrix that imparts the toughness needed in the composite. The material can be provided with controlled ratios of carbon, silicon, oxygen and hyrdrogen to optimize bonding to the fibers, bonding of the matrix to the fiber coating, and environmental protection of the fibers.

  • Publication number: 20030041525
Abstract: Ceramic forming polymers are used to form a tailorable bonding matrix for abrasive grit such as diamond, diamond-like carbon, cubic boron nitride, boron carbide and/or silicon carbide. The ceramic forming polymer is unique in that it can be heated to convert it to a ceramic material at a low enough temperature to prevent damage to the abrasive grits. The ceramic forming polymer may also contain controlled amounts of silicon, carbon, oxygen, and other elements to optimize the properties of the abrasive. A toughening media such as additional ceramic forming polymer, metal and/or polymer resin can be infused into a model of the abrasive tool to permit further tailoring of the abrasive tool to meet widely varying demands of machining both very hard materials as well as softer but more abrasive materials.

  • Patent number: 6190162
Abstract: A new infrared heater containing a gas fired burner having a metallic burner body with a combustion plenum chamber, a matrix which covers the combustion mixture plenum and a screen made of fibers treated with a silicon carbide. The screen could be connected to the matrix by a pressure fit. The invention also relates to a new matrix that is energy efficient and made from fibers ceramic or metallic, treated with a pre-ceramic polymer containing silicon and carbon to rigidize the matrix and increase its emittance.
