Patent number: 7942230Abstract: A hydraulic power steering system for a vehicle, e.g., an electrohydraulic power steering system for a motor vehicle, includes a servo valve, the relative movement of whose control parts actuates a piston rod of a servo cylinder and changes at least one steering angle of a wheel which is operatively connected to the piston rod, and additionally has an electric servo motor which drives a rack with the servo cylinder for adjusting the steering angle of the wheel in the same direction. In order to provide an electrohydraulic power steering system which is as compactly arranged as possible in the region of its actuator and may be used flexibly for different classes of vehicle, the action of the rack and the piston rod of the servo cylinder is combined, in a parallel arrangement with one another, on an addition member for jointly adjusting the steering angle of the wheel.Type: GrantFiled: February 10, 2005Date of Patent: May 17, 2011Assignee: ZF Lenksysteme GmbHInventors: Walter Kogel, Michael Haegele, Manfred Heintschel

Publication number: 20070163833Abstract: A steering system for a vehicle, e.g., a hydraulically assisted power-steering system for a motor vehicle, includes a steering spindle that connects a steering handle on its one end to a rotary slide valve or rotary pistons of a steering valve via a first torsion element. The steering system has a hydraulic servomotor for actuating an output member of a steering gear, a flow of pressurized media into working chambers of the hydraulic servomotor being controlled by the steering valve. The steering system additionally has an electric servomotor for actuating the output member. In order to provide a steering system, whose hydraulic servomotor is assisted, during operation, both mechanically by a steering handle and by an electric servomotor and is fail-safe, it is provided that the electric servomotor and the steering spindle act upon a common rotating member between the first torsion element and the rotary slide valve or rotary piston.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 25, 2005Publication date: July 19, 2007Inventors: Walter Kogel, Michael Hagele

Publication number: 20070145703Abstract: A steering axle for a vehicle has a spring-mounted, rigid axle body which is disposed transversely to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle and at the ends of which steerable wheels are pin-connected. A transmission device is provided for transferring steering motions of a steering member to the steerable wheels. A controlling and/or regulating device detects spring deflection of the rigid axle body and provides a signal for correcting the transfer of the nominal value of the steering angle inputted at the steering member to the steerable wheels, is supplied to a superimposing device in the transmission device as a function of the spring deflection.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 18, 2006Publication date: June 28, 2007Inventors: Walter Kogel, Andreas Braun

Publication number: 20060266148Abstract: A steering shaft especially for a motor vehicle has a torque-induced operative connection of a steering handling device with a steered wheel with a first shaft and with a second shaft, the shafts being connected torque-induced over a shaft joint with movavable joints. In order to create a steering shaft, the shaft joint of which achieves a large range, over which the deflection angle can be adjusted in all directions, while, at the same time, rotational nonuniformities of the steering shaft are minimized, the shaft joint is fixed at a component, which is attached to the vehicle, so that it can be swiveled approximately about the joint center with a device for the pivotable mounting of the shaft joint.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 23, 2006Publication date: November 30, 2006Inventors: Manfred Heintschel, Walter Kogel, Guenter Dieterle

Patent number: 6810985Abstract: A steering device for a vehicle includes an electric motor. A drive element pertaining to the electric motor acts directly upon a connecting rod via a gear and a helical gear.Type: GrantFiled: September 5, 2002Date of Patent: November 2, 2004Assignee: ZF Lenksysteme GmbHInventors: Martin Budaker, Walter Kogel

Patent number: 5799259Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for steering a vehicle (1) with steerable front and rear wheels (2, 3), in which the angle (.beta.) of the rear wheels (3) is set as a function of the steering angle (.alpha.) of the front wheels (2) and other parameters. The displacement of the rear wheels (3) during start-up and steering out of forward travel follows the steering movement of the front wheels (2) with a time delay. Such a steering characteristic prevents a corner (5) of the rear of the vehicle which is on the outside of the turn from running over a laterally placed obstacle, for example a curb, when starting up.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 1996Date of Patent: August 25, 1998Assignee: ZF Friedrichshafen AGInventors: Klaus Rief, Dieter Elser, Walter Kogel

Patent number: 5107752Abstract: An auxiliary power steering mechanism has a rotary valve that includes a rotary member integrally formed with the steering shaft of the vehicle and a fixed valve sleeve integrally formed with a threaded spindle. The rotary member contains a plurality of radial hydraulic fluid return bores arranged in two parallel rows with the bores of each row being spaced longitudinally. A guide groove in the valve sleeve, which is connected with a power cylinder, is assigned to each row of bores. An additional radial return bore is arranged in the middle of the two rows of bores and has a fixed residual cross section. All of the return bores include flat portions of different circumferential lengths to control the build-up of pressure in a surge chamber. The hydraulic return cross section produced by the bores is varied by a piston valve arranged in a concentric bore in the rotary member. The piston valve can be adjusted as a function of a pressure in accordance with speed.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 1989Date of Patent: April 28, 1992Assignee: Zahnradfabrik Friedrichshafen, AGInventors: Dieter Elser, Helmut Hetzel, Walter Kogel

Patent number: 5099939Abstract: In multifront and rear steering systems a problem exists due to fluid leakage which causes lack of synchronization in return to straight ahead steering position between the front and rear steering linkages causing inaccurate centering of the rear steering linkage in response to manual control of centering of the front steering linkage, where the front steering power is hydraulic and the rear steering power is hydrostatic. The invention provides the particular novelty of a centering device for the rear wheel steering linkage responsive to directional manipulation of the front wheels at the will of a driver from a steered position to a straight ahead position. In one embodiment a power steering cylinder is coupled to the rear steering linkage for effecting steering movement or return. Also connected to the rear steering linkage is a cylinder having a locking device and the centering device connected to actuate the rear steering linkage pursuant to automatically operating circuitry, within the skill of the art.Type: GrantFiled: July 6, 1990Date of Patent: March 31, 1992Assignee: Zahnradfabrik Friedrichshafen, AGInventors: Dieter Elser, Walter Kogel

Patent number: 5086687Abstract: An auxiliary power steering mechanism with a working piston installed in the steering gear has a rotary valve comprising a rotary member and a fixed valve sleeve. A piston valve is inserted in a bore provided in the rotary member. The piston valve is connected with an adjustment device, such as an electromagnet, via a tube supported by a torsion bar. The electromagnet adjusts the piston valve as a function of various influencing variables such as speed, and controls the condition of a plurality of hydraulic fluid flow return bores arranged in longitudinally spaced relation in the rotary member for noise-free control of the build-up of pressure in a surge chamber that is active at the moment. The bores have flat portions of different contours and circumferential lengths.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 1989Date of Patent: February 11, 1992Assignee: Zahnradfabrik Friedrichshafen, AG.Inventors: Dieter Elser, Helmut Hetzel, Walter Kogel
