In order to provide an electrohydraulic power steering system which is as compactly arranged as possible in the region of its actuator and may be used flexibly for different classes of vehicle, the action of the rack and the piston rod of the servo cylinder is combined, in a parallel arrangement with one another, on an addition member for jointly adjusting the steering angle of the wheel.

The displacement of the rear wheels (3) during start-up and steering out of forward travel follows the steering movement of the front wheels (2) with a time delay. Such a steering characteristic prevents a corner (5) of the rear of the vehicle which is on the outside of the turn from running over a laterally placed obstacle, for example a curb, when starting up.

    Abstract: An auxiliary power steering mechanism has a rotary valve that includes a rotary member integrally formed with the steering shaft of the vehicle and a fixed valve sleeve integrally formed with a threaded spindle. The rotary member contains a plurality of radial hydraulic fluid return bores arranged in two parallel rows with the bores of each row being spaced longitudinally. A guide groove in the valve sleeve, which is connected with a power cylinder, is assigned to each row of bores. An additional radial return bore is arranged in the middle of the two rows of bores and has a fixed residual cross section. All of the return bores include flat portions of different circumferential lengths to control the build-up of pressure in a surge chamber. The hydraulic return cross section produced by the bores is varied by a piston valve arranged in a concentric bore in the rotary member. The piston valve can be adjusted as a function of a pressure in accordance with speed.

    Abstract: In multifront and rear steering systems a problem exists due to fluid leakage which causes lack of synchronization in return to straight ahead steering position between the front and rear steering linkages causing inaccurate centering of the rear steering linkage in response to manual control of centering of the front steering linkage, where the front steering power is hydraulic and the rear steering power is hydrostatic. The invention provides the particular novelty of a centering device for the rear wheel steering linkage responsive to directional manipulation of the front wheels at the will of a driver from a steered position to a straight ahead position. In one embodiment a power steering cylinder is coupled to the rear steering linkage for effecting steering movement or return. Also connected to the rear steering linkage is a cylinder having a locking device and the centering device connected to actuate the rear steering linkage pursuant to automatically operating circuitry, within the skill of the art.

    Abstract: An auxiliary power steering mechanism with a working piston installed in the steering gear has a rotary valve comprising a rotary member and a fixed valve sleeve. A piston valve is inserted in a bore provided in the rotary member. The piston valve is connected with an adjustment device, such as an electromagnet, via a tube supported by a torsion bar. The electromagnet adjusts the piston valve as a function of various influencing variables such as speed, and controls the condition of a plurality of hydraulic fluid flow return bores arranged in longitudinally spaced relation in the rotary member for noise-free control of the build-up of pressure in a surge chamber that is active at the moment. The bores have flat portions of different contours and circumferential lengths.
