  • Publication number: 20080001028
Abstract: A span-loaded, highly flexible flying wing, having horizontal control surfaces mounted aft of the wing on extended beams to form local pitch-control devices. Each of five spanwise wing segments of the wing has one or more motors and photovoltaic arrays, and produces its own lift independent of the other wing segments, to minimize inter-segment loads. Wing dihedral is controlled by separately controlling the local pitch-control devices consisting of a control surface on a boom, such that inboard and outboard wing segment pitch changes relative to each other, and thus relative inboard and outboard lift is varied.

  • Patent number: 4170543
Abstract: An electrical insulating oil having both high positive and high negative direct current breakdown voltage values is prepared by catalytically reforming a petroleum naphtha or similar feedstock and then fractionating or otherwise treating the reformed material to produce a highly aromatic oil which boils in the range between about 400.degree. and about 700.degree. F., contains less than about 1.0 weight percent of polar compounds, and includes less than about 2.5 weight percent of aromatic compounds having four or more condensed aromatic rings per molecule. This aromatic oil may be blended with up to about 75 volume percent, based on the total blend, of a low aromatic petroleum fraction which has been hydrogen treated, solvent extracted or acid treated to reduce its aromatics content to a level less than about 20% by weight. The aromatic oil or blend may be hydrogen treated or contacted with an adsorbent to improve further its stability and other properties.

  • Patent number: 3947537
Abstract: Battery separators are produced from nonwoven mats of thermoplastic fibers by wetting the fibers with a surfactant-water mixture to modify the surface properties of the fibers in the nonwoven mat, vaporizing the water while depositing the surfactant on the fibers, heating the nonwoven mat prior to compressing and then compressing to increase the fiber-to-fiber bonding as well as to form the desired structure. During compressing, ribs may be formed by using appropriate embossed rolls or press plate patterns. After the compressing step, slitting, cooling and cutting steps are carried out to produce a battery separator of the desired dimensions.
