  • Patent number: 5836193
Abstract: Apparatus and a method for forming an elongated workpiece are provided. In a first embodiment, a press has a ram and movable upper platen to which is secured a first die. Upper guide members are provided on the upper platen for movement of slide members on each responsive to movement of the platen. Lower guide elements, which cooperate in a telescoping manner with upper guide members, are secured to a lower platen. The first die cooperates with a pair of rotatable second die members which are provided with each being rotatable responsive to movement of a slide member. In a preferred embodiment, the upper guide members secured to the platens are in relative sliding contact and links connect the slide members with the rotatable second dies. In a preferred embodiment, the elongated metal workpiece may be formed by bending under the influence of the forces applied to the first die and second die members through the upper platen by the press ram.

  • Patent number: 4292496
Abstract: A method is provided of vertical gas metal-arc two-sided welding of thick plate in a single welding pass on each surface of the plate. The method includes providing a first weld groove on one surface of the plate into which a weld bead is deposited in a single pass. Thereafter, a second weld groove is formed on the opposite surface of the plates by removing base plate material along the joining line to a depth extending at least to the first weld bead penetrating from the welding pass in the first weld groove. The plates are further joined together by depositing a weld bead in a single pass along the second welding groove. The welding is provided by impressing a direct electric current of from 290 to 420 amperes between an electrode and the plates shielded primarily by argon gas.A metal article and a welded joint are also provided.

  • Patent number: 4097716
Abstract: A welding method for forming a fillet welded joint including the steps of placing an abutting edge of a first metal member onto a surface of a second metal member at generally right angles thereto, the abutting edge having a series of alternating lands and slots extending through the entire thickness of the first member, and arc welding employing a consumable electrode to form a fully penetrated fillet weld from one side only of the joint with the weld filling the slots and melting the lands.
