  • Patent number: 8077417
Abstract: A method for synchronizing writing to a bit patterned media includes: reading bits from skipped blocks on the bit patterned media, using timing of bits read from the skipped blocks to update a write clock, and writing request data to physical blocks on the bit patterned media, interleaved with the skipped blocks. An apparatus that operates in accordance with the method is also provided.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 11, 2008
Date of Patent: December 13, 2011
    Assignee: Seagate Technology LLC
Inventors: Michael Leigh Mallary, Walter Richard Eppler, Werner Scholz
  • Patent number: 7982994
Abstract: A data storage system includes recording media with a shingled track pattern of multiple data tracks in which mapped data bits are recorded. The mapped data are coherently aligned with one another across the multiple data tracks. A read head has an effective read head width that extends across the multiple data tracks and that is aligned to coherently read the mapped data bits. A read head output includes a non-binary multi-level amplitude summation of the mapped data bits.

Date of Patent: July 19, 2011
    Assignee: Seagate Technology, LLC
Inventors: Mehmet Fatih Erden, Mourad Benakli, Walter Richard Eppler
  • Patent number: 7885025
Abstract: A data storage system includes a storage medium having a plurality of data sectors and a head that communicates with the data storage medium. The head produces a readback signal when reading information from the data storage medium. A computation unit extracts a distortion component of the readback signal and generates a position error signal from the distortion component.

  • Publication number: 20100073808
Abstract: In a particular embodiment, a storage system is disclosed that includes a discrete track media having a plurality of concentric data tracks to store data and including a respective plurality of non-magnetic regions to separate adjacent data tracks. The non-magnetic regions include encoded position information. The storage system further includes a controller adapted to adjust a position of a read/write head relative to a center of a particular track based on the encoded position information.

  • Patent number: 7440384
Abstract: A magnetic recording device is provided according to the present invention for magnetic recording on a recording medium. The magnetic recording device includes a planar waveguide having a propagation axis. The planar waveguide allows light received thereby to propagate along the propagation axis. The magnetic recording device further includes a magnetic pole having a yoke disposed adjacent the planar waveguide and a pole tip extending into the planar waveguide along the propagation axis. By extending the pole tip into, and incorporating it with, the planar waveguide, the light propagating through the planar waveguide and a magnetic flux flowing through the magnetic pole are co-locatable on a recording medium disposed adjacent the magnetic recording device.
