  • Publication number: 20040028392
Abstract: User input to a device driver to affect device driver settings is handled by a method according to various aspects of the present invention. The device driver has settings which include a plurality of values. The method includes the steps of (a) in response to user input, replacing the value of a setting with a new value; and then (b) reviewing all settings for consistency. During the review, additional replacements may be dictated according to rules (i.e., conditional procedures) which may have been received from a file into the device driver. Each rule accounts for one type of interaction. For example, when a user changes the media from letter paper to envelope using a printer driver user interface, the user interface is updated to show that two-sided printing and stapling settings are now off and not available. By allowing inconsistent settings to exist and then be corrected, user interface programming source code is made more manageable.

  • Patent number: 6631010
Abstract: The user goes to a Web imaging homepage to print a document that was recently submitted to the Web-based imaging system. The user selects a printer from the list of available printers. The user then clicks on the “print one” button located beside the printer selected. If the-user has previously printed to this particular device, the printer will print one page according to last printer settings. If the user has not printed to this particular device, the printer prints one copy based upon a master list of default settings the for that printer, such as SourceTray=AutoSelect, Duplex=None or Printer Default, etc.

  • Publication number: 20030172148
Abstract: A computing system that includes a personal computer and a printer is described. The personal computer allows a user to select a document to be printed and to download Web content provided by the printer. The Web content enables the personal computer to print the document in response to user input. The Web content further enables the personal computer to detect if the printer encounters an alert condition while printing the document. In response to detecting the alert condition, the computer displays a hyperlink. Selecting the hyperlink initiates a performance of the computer of a specified function for assisting the user in resolving the alert condition. The administrator can define the hyperlinks.

  • Publication number: 20030093498
Abstract: A system for identifying and extracting text in a distributed processing environment is disclosed. The invention comprises a client computer coupled to a network and including a browser, a server computer coupled to the network, and information associated with a user of the client computer, where a destination service presented by the server computer to the user obtains portions of text in the information. The destination service may access the text by using a code portion that is sent to the user's computer and that is used to identify information relating to the user. Alternatively, the destination service may use a server to directly access the information specific to the user. Once the text information associated with the user is identified, the destination service may employ optical character recognition (OCR) to obtain the text information, or may request a text rendition of the internal representation of an indicated region of a graphic that includes the desired text.

  • Publication number: 20030084178
Abstract: Specialized encoded media are detected when inserted into the multipurpose paper input tray of the printer. Each specialized media is displayed in a list of available media provided by the web-based imaging service. Graphics representing each of the specialized media are downloaded e.g., from a site on the Internet accessed through information encoded on the specialized media, and are displayed to provide a preview of the user's image data superimposed in register on an image of the specialized media. In a variation, the multipurpose tray includes an integral bar code scanner that automatically identifies the specialized media. Among other variations, the multipurpose tray uses the motion of insertion to scan the specialized media, and inks “visible” only through infrared scanning mechanisms are encoded on the media.

  • Publication number: 20030081241
Abstract: In a web based imaging environment, a user browses to web-based destination service representing a printing device, chooses print options including printing more than one copy, and selects print. If the printing device internally supports collated printing, the destination service uses the internal collated printing capability conventionally to print multiple collated copies. If not, the service then provides externally assisted collated printing by sending the user's image data to the printer once for each copy requested. In a variation, the destination service updates the front panel of the printing device to indicate which collated copy is being printed. In a further variation, the updated front panel status information is displayed dynamically at the user's browser. In another variation, the destination service accesses the user's identity on a demand basis multiple times to retrieve copies of the user's imaging information for collated printing.

  • Publication number: 20030084086
Abstract: In a web-based imaging environment, a user accesses a destination service (e.g., representing a printer), which retrieves user's imaging data and configures available production options for a processing job. The user selects desired production options, after which the destination service estimates the time duration required to process the user's job based on the selected options. The user selects an option indicating whether subsequent copies of a current job can be interrupted. If so, a subsequent user can interrupt either manually or via the destination service, delivering a status message to the first user. The interrupted job is stored and is resumed intact after the interrupting job has processed. Subsequent output copies can be delivered into the original output tray, or can be separated in other ways. In some embodiments, if the currently processing job includes multiple output copies, then it is allowed to complete the current copy before being interrupted.

  • Publication number: 20030081246
Abstract: In a web-based imaging environment, a user selects the duplex printing option and elects to print. A destination service representing a printer then retrieves in order and prints the first sides of the user's image data, then issues a request to reload the copies. The destination service displays in the user's browser instructions specific to the selected printer for manually reloading the copies in a proper orientation for second side printing using the selected printer. After reloading, the user indicates that the pages have been reloaded, and the second sides of user's image data are retrieved in order and printed onto the non-printed surfaces opposite the first sides. In some variations, the printer provides status displays that first (second) sides are printing and/or indicates when the job is complete. Embodiments provide means of performing manual duplex printing by interacting with a printer through platform independent web-based imaging.
