  • Publication number: 20080014242
Abstract: The invention includes a synthetic bone substitute material suitable for use as a replacement for cancellous bone in a bone graft composition, the material comprising a reticulated framework of interconnecting bioceramic struts defining an interconnecting interstitial void volume, and a solid non-porous composition substantially filling the interstitial void volume and in intimate contact with the reticulated framework, the pore-filling composition comprising calcium sulfate. Calcium triphosphate is a preferred bioceramic material for the reticulated framework.
    Type: Application
    Filed: July 2, 2007
    Publication date: January 17, 2008
Inventors: Robyn Overby, Olaf Schulz, Ann Burgess, Warren Haggard, Michael Vincent
  • Publication number: 20070254007
Abstract: A composite chitosan/nano-hydroxyapatite microsphere-based material used for bone-grafting and delivery of therapeutic agents. The composite material may be produced using co-precipitation methods. The composite material may be used to form scaffolds with significantly greater surface area and surface roughness than scaffolds composed of only chitosan. Composite scaffolds exhibit less swelling and greater toughness and flexibility than scaffolds fabricated by other techniques. Composite scaffolds also exhibit greater osteoblast proliferation. Composite scaffolds also may contain therapeutic agents or medicaments, and may be lyophilized.
