  • Patent number: 6313751
Abstract: A modification to existing mono-block battery design for positively indicating the operating condition of the battery by adding a failure detector. The voltage of two groups of internal series connected cells are measured and compared. An indicator of one color indicates the battery is operating normally and an indicator of a contrasting color indicates the battery is defective. The indicator may be located remotely from the failure detector. An additional embodiment provides for an optical indicator located remotely from the failure detector such that luminous energy is transferred from the failure detector to the remote indicator by an optical-conductor.

  • Patent number: 5175531
Abstract: Disclosed is a battery condition monitoring system that monitors the condition of batteries connected in parallel in order to determine that each battery is generating the necessary power. The system determines the difference in voltages that are proportional to the currents generated by the batteries. The system compares the voltage difference between the currents that is a positive value to a predetermined reference voltage which is the maximum allowed difference in the battery currents. If the positive difference value is greater than the reference voltage, one or more LEDs will illuminate indicating that one or more of the batteries is weak or defective, uniquely identifying the battery or batteries.

  • Patent number: 4823086
Abstract: Disclosed is a system for individually monitoring the condition of a single battery or each battery and related supply cables in a multi-battery battery pack. The system includes a means for positively indicating the condition of each battery in the battery pack. To monitor the condition of each battery, the system includes a means for comparing the voltage applied at the two terminals of each battery in the battery pack, and if this comparison reveals a deviation from a normal voltage difference, the system will indicate that the battery or related cables are faulty. For a properly operating battery the system will provide an indication that the battery is supplying the proper voltage, and when the voltage of any one of the batteries deviates from the standard, a system provides an indication that the particular batteries so deviate and will continue to show a deviation until reset even though the defective battery shows a normal voltage under a no load condition.
