Patent number: 5359974Abstract: Several embodiments of internal combustion engines having at least five valves, three intake and two exhaust, all operated by a single camshaft. The intake valves are disposed so as to provide a smooth combustion chamber configuration by minimizing the difference in-angle between the valves and the valves and rocker arms are arranged so that different degree of lift may be provided. All of the intake valves have the same stem length. One rocker arm operates one valve and another rocker arm operates two valves with the two valves being operated being differently configured so as to provide the desired different lift. In addition, a staged intake system is included that has a single intake passage that extends perpendicular to a plane containing the cylinder bore axis and serving one intake valve and a siamese intake passage serving the other intake valves. The siamese intake passage has a section that extends also perpendicularly to the plane.Type: GrantFiled: September 7, 1993Date of Patent: November 1, 1994Assignee: Yamaha Hatsudoki Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Kenichi Nonogawa, Makoto Shimamoto, Wataru Fuchigami

Patent number: 5044333Abstract: A balancer arrangement for a two cylinder in-line internal combustion engine that includes a drive gear formed on the crankshaft between a pair of throws and between a pair of bearing surfaces. A pair of balance shafts are driven from this drive gear and have inertial masses coupled to them through a torsional vibration damper. The inertial masses are disposed between the adjacent pair of cylinders and within the crankcase so as to provide a compact engine.Type: GrantFiled: June 1, 1990Date of Patent: September 3, 1991Assignee: Yamaha Hatsudoki Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Wataru Fuchigami, Yoji Utsumi

Patent number: 4869063Abstract: Several embodiments of exhaust systems including reflective valve means interposed between the engine exhaust ports and an expansion chamber for improving performance at mid range and under low speeds. The reflective means comprise a plurality of rotatably supported members that are affixed to different shafts and the shafts are coupled together for simultaneous rotation. In some embodiments, the shafts are coupled by a linkage system and in another by means of a gear system. The shafts are journaled in either the same or separate valve housings and the valve members may be positioned on different horizontal planes or at an angle to each other to suit a variety of exhaust pipe configurations.Type: GrantFiled: January 23, 1989Date of Patent: September 26, 1989Assignee: Yamaha Hatsudoki Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Tadashi Sakurai, Wataru Fuchigami

Patent number: 4795420Abstract: An improved valve for use in an exhaust system to increase the performance of the engine throughout the entire engine and load speed ranges by providing reflective areas that cooperate with the individual exhaust pipes of the engine to reduce pressure pulses in the combustion chamber during valve overlap periods. A number of embodiments of compact valve constructions are shown that employ relatively short journaling shafts for minimizing the effects of thermal expansion.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 1987Date of Patent: January 3, 1989Assignee: Yamaha Hatsudoki Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Tadashi Sakurai, Wataru Fuchigami, Hideaki Kitta

Patent number: 4765137Abstract: Several embodiments of exhaust systems for motorcycles that improve the engine performance by positioning reflective valve members between an expansion chamber and the exhaust ports of the engine. In each embodiment, there are provided separate valve bodies with separate valve supporting shafts that are all controlled by means of a common controller either through a single or multiple servo motors.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 1987Date of Patent: August 23, 1988Assignee: Yamaha Hatsudoki Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Tadashi Sakurai, Wataru Fuchigami
