    Abstract: A preform insert for use in preventing the flow of a braze or solder material into a void in an article during a brazing or soldering operation. The insert is particularly suited to brazing techniques for repairing stator vanes of a gas turbine, though equally effective for use in the manufacture or repair of other articles, as well as soldering operations. The preform insert is composed of a refractory metal oxide powder dispersed in a polymeric solid such that the preform insert is solid yet relatively flexible. As such, the preform insert can be formed to be appropriately shaped and sized to fill a void in an article, such that the void will remain open after the brazing or soldering operation.
