Patent number: 7818882Abstract: A one-way drive device is disclosed herein and includes a pocket plate assembly having a disc-shaped pocket plate and a notch plate assembly having a disc-shaped notch plate. The device also includes an axially extending, open-ended cylindrical shell for containing therein the pocket and notch assemblies. This shell includes opposite first and second axial ends and opposing inner and outer circumferential surfaces which extend axially between the end and which together are configured to include splines and first and second sets of tabs. The splines are circumferentially spaced from one another and extend axially across the shell body and they project radially inward and outward such that there innermost surface edges of the splines together define an innermost annular bearing surface.Type: GrantFiled: August 24, 2007Date of Patent: October 26, 2010Assignee: EPX, L.P.Inventors: Frank A. Patent number: 7213694Abstract: A drive device includes a first member including a first shoulder, and a second member positioned in close proximity to the first member and including a second shoulder. The device also includes a coupling arrangement including a strut having a first edge for direct engagement with the first shoulder, a second edge for engagement with the second shoulder and supported for pivotal movement between engaged and overrun positions, based on relative rotation of the first and second members such that the first member drives the second member in a drive mode with the strut in the engaged position and the first and second members can overrun with respect to one another with the strut in the overrun position. The coupling arrangement also includes a cushioning member disposed between the second edge and the second shoulder for cushioning each initial engagement of the strut in the drive mode.Type: GrantFiled: May 10, 2005Date of Patent: May 8, 2007Assignee: EXP, L.P.Inventors: Frank A. Fitz, Wayne K. Higashi, Paul B Pires, Stephen C. Shear

Patent number: 6896111Abstract: A one-way drive device includes a first, drive member rotatable about an axis in both a drive direction and an opposite, overrun direction. The one-way drive device also includes a second, driven member rotatable about the axis in at least a driven direction. The one-way drive device further includes a coupling arrangement including at least one strut cooperating with the first and second members such that the first member is able to drive the second member in the driven direction by causing the strut to initially engage and remain engaged between the first and second members during the time the first member drives the second member. In addition, the coupling arrangement includes a cushioning arrangement for cushioning the initial engagement of the strut between the first and second members.Type: GrantFiled: April 5, 2002Date of Patent: May 24, 2005Assignee: EXP, L.P.Inventors: Frank A. Patent number: 6615965Abstract: A planar type of over-running clutch including first and second confronting plates is disclosed herein. The second plate itself includes movable struts and associated biasing mechanisms for cooperative engagement with cooperating shoulder members of the first plate under certain circumstances. An arrangement forming part of the second plate and part of each strut cooperates with the biasing mechanism of the second plate for preventing any contact between the struts and the first plate when the second plate rotates in a particular way.Type: GrantFiled: May 18, 2001Date of Patent: September 9, 2003Assignee: EPX, L.P.Inventors: Frank A. Fitz, Wayne K. Higashi, Paul B Pires

Patent number: 6520596Abstract: A hub for use in and as part of a wheel support assembly adapted to bolt to the end plate of an axle of a vehicle for supporting a tire is disclosed herein along with the wheel support assembly itself. The hub is configured as a plurality of bars which are connected together to form a hub body. This hub body defines a common center point and a contact face. The contact face is where the hub is in contact with the axle end plate when the device is mounted to a vehicle. Each of the bars has on one side a contact surface, and a through hole for receiving an axle lug bolt. The contact surface on each of the bars has a curved shape on its outwardly most extending end, the curvature of which is defined by a radius less than the distance between the common center point of the hub body and the outwardly most extending end of the bars.Type: GrantFiled: July 25, 2001Date of Patent: February 18, 2003Assignee: Kohl Wheels, LLCInventors: Frank A. Patent number: 6042194Abstract: A method of making a wheel support assembly adapted to bolt to an axle of a vehicle for supporting a tire is disclosed herein along with the assembly itself. In accordance with this method, an outer annular rim having an outer annular surface configured to support a tire is provided along with at least one integral piece of sheet metal. The sheet metal is stamp formed into a plurality of spoke arrangements, each of which includes (i) at least two elongated spokes respectively including inner ends and outer ends and (ii) a cross-bar connecting together the inner ends of the spokes and configured to bolt to the axle for connecting the inner ends of the spokes to the axle, whereby to serve as part of a hub of the wheel support assembly. The outer ends of the spokes are connected to the rim. In one embodiment disclosed herein, each spoke arrangement is formed from its own separate and distinct piece of sheet metal.Type: GrantFiled: June 16, 1998Date of Patent: March 28, 2000Assignee: Kuhl Wheels, LLCInventors: Frank A Fitz, Craig T.
