Patent number: 11238754Abstract: The present invention automatically replaces in an assessment response a string of mathematical symbols determined to be ambiguous with an unambiguous string of mathematical symbols. An editing tool may receive an assessment response from a client over a communication network. The assessment response may comprise i) a text with a mathematical meaning and ii) a string of mathematical symbols. The text and the string of mathematical symbols represent different non-overlapping characters in the assessment response. The editing tool may match the string of mathematical symbols with a known ambiguous string of mathematical symbols and determine the mathematical meaning in the text of the assessment response. The editing tool may replace the string of mathematical symbols determined to be ambiguous with an unambiguous string of mathematical symbols to generate an updated assessment response. The editing tool may transmit the updated assessment response to the client for display.Type: GrantFiled: April 2, 2019Date of Patent: February 1, 2022Assignee: PEARSON EDUCATION, INC.Inventors: Donald DeLand, Samuel Dooley, Lisa Eggers-Robertson, Michael J. Garcia, Charles McQuilkin, Wayne Ostler, Jennifer Ramirez, James Setaro

Patent number: 10438502Abstract: Techniques described herein relate to generating new assessment items and updating existing assessment items. Input data may be received corresponding to the addition, removal, or modification of assessment components within assessment items, and may cause immediate generation and validation of corresponding markup language data blocks, thereby allowing for interactive construction and automated encoding of assessment items. Additional techniques described herein relate to determining compatible scoring types for assessment items and generating and embedding markup language data blocks corresponding to assessment item scoring data.Type: GrantFiled: July 25, 2016Date of Patent: October 8, 2019Assignee: PEARSON EDUCATION, INC.Inventors: Wayne Ostler, Kristy Harris, Jason Craft, Mark Ott, Michelle Richard
