    Abstract: Prosthetic hip stems for use in prosthetic hip joints and, in particular, provides prosthetic hip stems that are designed to achieve more optimized outcomes with certain types of patient anatomy, such as the anatomy of female patients and/or patients having osteoporosis. Each hip stem in a family or set of hip stems has diaphyseal width, metaphyseal width, offset, and head height dimensions. In a set of hip stems of increasing nominal size, the diaphyseal width dimension increases substantially non-proportionally to the corresponding increase of the metaphyseal width, offset, and head height dimensions, thereby providing a family or set of hip stems that is particularly adapted for patients having osteoporosis, in which the cortical bone of the diaphysis of the femur becomes thinner with progression of the osteoporosis.

A method can comprise inserting a first tibial shim component between a tibial bearing component and a tibial base or a tibial plate component in an anterior/posterior direction. The first tibial shim component can include one or both of a medial edge having a different height than a lateral edge or an anterior edge having a different height than a posterior edge. The method can further comprise testing one or more of a stability, a force balance, or a range of motion of a knee joint in which the first tibial shim component is inserted. If the testing result is not satisfactory, the method can include removing the first tibial shim component, and inserting a second tibial shim component between the tibial bearing component and the tibial base or tibial plate component in the anterior/posterior direction.

    Abstract: A surgical retractor is disclosed for use when surgery is performed adjacent a bone and remains in place for an appropriate duration without requiring manual assistance. A barrier member includes a plurality of cannulated fixation posts for its temporary placement on, and attached to, the bone and a soft tissue engaging surface which extends transverse of a surface of the bone. Guides, including the cannulated fixation posts, slidably receive mounting pins which supplement the fixation posts for temporarily attaching the barrier member to the bone. The barrier member is also provided with bottom and top flanges which extend transversely of the soft tissue engaging surface and cooperate therewith to prevent entry of the soft tissue into an adjacent surgical site.
