Patent number: 7949613Abstract: A method for distributing military mail includes the steps of compiling military unit and associated delivery code information into a computer searchable military address management system database which associates a military unit zip code with a current geographic location for that unit; obtaining military unit personnel change of address information from a number of sources including a national change of address database maintained by a federal postal service and input from a military unit to which a military mail recipient belongs, which information is compiled into a computer searchable military change of address database, which information includes change of address information more recent than change of address information reflected in a federal national change of address database; and using information from the military address management system database and the military change of address database to redirect incorrectly addressed mail pieces to a military mail recipient's current address.Type: GrantFiled: May 2, 2003Date of Patent: May 24, 2011Assignee: Siemens Industry, Inc.Inventors: Alan O'Martin, Robert Fisher, Carlos Macia, Wayne Sipe

Publication number: 20040093222Abstract: A process according to the invention takes daily address information and uses it to update the United States Postal Service (USPS) NCOA database, creating a new database that is current daily. The new database will assist businesses in making corrections to address information prior to printing address labels and delivering the items to a mail or parcel service provider. This process will enable the collection of address change information at near real time, validate the change information, and distribute this new database to licensed users on a daily or more frequent basis.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 7, 2002Publication date: May 13, 2004Inventors: Wayne Sipe, Ben F. Bruce, Shahrom Kiani, Alan E. O'Martin, Gary Allen, John J. Mampe

Patent number: 5703783Abstract: The present invention comprises apparatus for identifying, intercepting and forwarding incorrectly addressed mailpieces having either a machine readable or non-machine readable address. The apparatus reads (either mechanically or manually) the addressee name and the mailpiece destination marking address for processing in a database and comparison to a list of names and former addresses in the USPS National Change of Address database of persons who have requested mail forwarding service. If the read name and address match a name and former address in the database, then the mailpiece is identified as having an incorrect address and intercepted from the mail stream. The apparatus then searches the NCOA database for a forwarding address and delivery point ZIP code corresponding to the address. The forwarding address and delivery point ZIP marking number are printed on the mailpiece in place of the incorrect address and the mailpiece is returned to the mail stream for delivery to the addressee.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 1995Date of Patent: December 30, 1997Assignee: ElectroCom Automation, L.P.Inventors: Ronald L.
