  • Patent number: 4623399
Abstract: Liquid and foam formulations useful for removing iron oxide deposits, for example from heat transfer equipment, comprising an organic solution or foam of N-hydroxylethyl ethylenediamine triacetic acid and an organic acid (for example, formic acid); and a method of removing iron oxide deposits from encrusted equipment surfaces by injecting the liquid or foam formulation, preferably also containing a corrosion inhibitor, into equipment to be cleaned, and circulating the liquid or foam formulation.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 4, 1985
Date of Patent: November 18, 1986
    Assignee: Dowell Schlumberger Incorporated
    Inventor: Wayne W. Frenier
  • Patent number: 4430128
Abstract: Aqueous acid compositions are described which comprise (a) hydroxyethylethylenediaminetriacetic acid, and (b) a compatible acid corrosion inhibitor. The compositions are useful in removing iron oxide scale from metal surfaces.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 5, 1980
Date of Patent: February 7, 1984
    Assignee: The Dow Chemical Company
Inventors: Wayne W. Frenier, David A. Wilson
  • Patent number: 4310435
Abstract: The method of chemically cleaning acid-soluble, sulfide-containing scale from a metal surface using an aqueous cleaning composition comprising an aqueous non-oxidizing acid having one or more aldehydes dissolved or dispersed therein is improved by generating the aldehyde in situ. An aqueous acid cleaning composition comprising hydrochloric or sulfuric acid and hexamethylene tetramine is a preferred composition.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 6, 1979
Date of Patent: January 12, 1982
    Assignee: The Dow Chemical Co.
    Inventor: Wayne W. Frenier
  • Patent number: 4220550
Abstract: Sulfide-containing scale is removed from metal surfaces by contacting the encrusted surface with an aqueous acid cleaning solution having an aldehyde (e.g., formaldehyde) dissolved or dispersed in the acid in an amount sufficient to prevent the evolution of hydrogen sulfide gas.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 6, 1978

  • Patent number: 3996147
Abstract: The corrosion of metal surfaces in contact with aqueous acid cleaning solutions is inhibited by sulfonium salt corresponding to the formula ##STR1## wherein n is 1 or 2; R.sub.1 is an electron withdrawing group; R.sub.2 is a hydrocarbyl radical or inertly-substituted hydrocarbyl radical of up to about 24 carbon atoms; R.sub.3 is alkyl of from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, inertly-substituted alkyl of 2-4 carbon atoms, allyl, phenyl or inertly-substituted phenyl; or R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are joined to form a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring; and A.sup.- is a compatible anion. These sulfonium salts are effective corrosion inhibitors even in the presence of ferric ions.
