  • Publication number: 20070210473
Abstract: About 78.0-91.4% refined lignocellulosic fibres were blended with 8.0-12.0% formaldehyde-based resin, 0.5-2.0% wax and 0.1-8.0% oil in a blowline or a blender before mat forming and panel pressing. Fibres can be from cereal straws or wood species. Wax can be slack or emulsified wax. Oil is selected from different groups including, but not being limited to, vegetable oils, tree oils and any kinds of oils and oil mixtures which consist of fatty acids with 12 to 24 carbon atoms. Inverse Gas Chromatography (IGC) measurement and MDF panel test results have shown that fibre adhesion characteristics have changed significantly, leading to significant panel internal bond (IB) and dimensional stability improvements.

  • Patent number: 6929854
Abstract: A method of producing boards or panels from cereal straw includes the steps of treating and mechanically refining the straw with steam under elevated pressure which may be in excess of 8 bar (800 kPa). The resulting fiber may then be pressed in to boards or panels without added binder or mixed with a urea formaldehyde or melamine urea formaldehyde binder.

Date of Patent: August 16, 2005
    Assignee: Alberta Research Council Inc.

  • Patent number: 6641909
Abstract: A method of forming a structural member from hemp hurd and the structural member produced which is substantially free of hemp bats fibers is made by providing hemp stalks which have been decorticated and hurd material is divided into hurd strands which are then mixed with a binder and then pressed into a structural member. The hemp hurd strands can be mixed with wood strands to form wood/hurd structural members.
