  • Patent number: 9971659
Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for programming non-volatile storage. Methods involve identifying boot loader code stored in a first partition of a non-volatile storage, the boot loader code being marked as active, executing the boot loader code using one or more processors of the computing system, loading a firmware image to a second partition of the non-volatile storage, the second partition being separate from the first partition, and marking the firmware image as active. Methods further involve detecting a power loss event and, following a power cycle, determining that the firmware image is stored in the second partition and has been marked as active, and, in response to said determination, making a copy of the firmware image and storing the copy in the first partition.

  • Publication number: 20180117720
Abstract: The present invention relates to a conditioning method of gas turbine engine components (e.g. compressor blades and vanes) for aerodynamic noise reduction. The gas turbine engine components are plasma treated in a high vacuum environment to generally reach a surface roughness (Ra) below 150 nanometers and in some cases below 25 nanometers. Then during the same process the components are coated using either a metallic or ceramic, hard, thin coating ranging from 100 to 3000 nanometers in thickness depending on desired surface smoothness and non-fouling properties. The same treatment combined with a surface relaxation process, which is part of a smoothing process, allows applying even up to 100 micrometers of hard coating without changes to high cycle fatigue properties and overall performance. Improved surface smoothness of the components and enhanced non-adhesiveness of the contaminants advance the quality of the flow through the gas path and compressor aerodynamic noise reduction.

  • Publication number: 20180120437
Abstract: The present invention relates to using a self calibrating and recalibrating 230, 925 optical sensors piston rod displacement. Self calibration enables field calibration of uncalibrated 230, 925 optical sensors. During operation, recalibration enables detecting and correcting for wear and damage of the 200 piston rod and/or 230, 925 optical sensors. 210 Calibration positions on the surface of the 200 piston rod are imaged by 230 optical sensors using laser or darkfield lenses designed for optical computer mice. Natural surface patterns can be used in locations where 210 calibration positions are required, which reduces or eliminates the need for marked 210 calibration positions. Marked 210 calibration positions are spatially unique encoded sequences used to determine the piston rod absolute position. Storing only the significant features of 210 calibration positions saves significant memory.

  • Patent number: 9957057
Abstract: A gust lock lever system associated with an aircraft throttle quadrant allows flight crew to freely choose which engine to use for ground taxing operations. A stop member is connected to a crossbar of the gust lock lever system for moveable positioning into alignment with a respective one of the port and starboard engine throttle levers. The stop member causes the port and starboard throttle levers to thereby assume an asymmetrically differential side-by-side position relative to one another in response to advancement of the port and starboard throttle levers toward the crossbar when the crossbar is in an intermediate position thereof. The asymmetrically differential side-by-side position of the throttle levers therefore provide the flight crew with an unordinary tactile sensation in the event that the aircraft's engine throttles are attempted to be advanced to a take-off thrust condition with the gust lock lever system improperly deployed in the intermediate ground taxiing position.

  • Publication number: 20180111715
Abstract: A stay-tab beverage can with protective guard is provided. An example protective guard made integral with beverage cans keeps insects and foreign objects out of the beverage can. Rotating versions of the protective guard can use the existing rivet of a stay-tab to accommodate the protective guard as an add-on to the manufacturing process. Other versions of the protective guard hinge or slide to protect the can's opening. Example designs of the protective guard are attached to the can in various ways, and rotate, flip, or slide to engage the opening of the beverage can. Some example designs of the guard can hold a drinking straw in place, with other versions cap or seal the beverage. A webbed version of the guard provides a grill or grate, while solid flap versions open for fluid flow and close when the flow stops. The protective guards may be made in various commercially desirable shapes and colors.

  • Patent number: 9943396
Abstract: Various devices are described to provide filtering of flow from the aorta to the left carotid artery and the right carotid artery. The filters can be brought into a desired position through one or more peripheral arteries. A single filter device can provide the desired filtering or a plurality of devices can be used. In particular a single filter device can span between the brachiocephalic artery and the left carotid artery. These filter devices can be used effectively to capture emboli generated during procedures on the heart so that emboli do not travel to the patient's brain where the emboli can cause a stroke or other adverse event. In particular, these filters can be used during percutaneous procedures on the heart, such as endovascular heart valve replacement.

  • Patent number: 9936924
Abstract: An embodiment in accordance with the present invention provides a method for applying task-based performance predictors (measures of noise, spatial resolution, and detectability index) based on numerical observer models and approximations to the local noise and spatial resolution properties of the CBCT reconstruction process (e.g., penalized-likelihood iterative reconstruction). These predictions are then used to identify projections views (i.e., points that will constitute the scan trajectory) that maximize task performance, beginning with the projection view that maximizes detectability, proceeding to the next-best view, and continuing in an (arbitrarily constrained) orbit that can be physically realized on advanced robotic C-arm platforms.

  • Patent number: 9934543
Abstract: A user, such as an employee of an institution, may travel overseas where data or devices may be compromised. Described herein is a system and method for receiving travel data for the user from a travel data source and receiving a list of countries with a high level of security threats where data security may be an issue. Based on the travel data for the user and the list of countries with a high level of security threats, it may be determined whether the user is entering a country with a high level of security threats. If so, one or more user devices associated with the user may be determined, and data security scans of the devices may be generated before, during, and/or after travel. Data security issues may be determined based on a comparison of the scans. A report of the issues may optionally be generated.

  • Patent number: 9933566
Abstract: Embodiments herein describe a photonic chip which includes a coupling interface for evanescently coupling the chip to a waveguide on an external substrate. In one embodiment, the photonic chip includes a tapered waveguide that aligns with a tapered waveguide on the external substrate. The respective tapers of the two waveguides are inverted such that as the width of the waveguide in the photonic chip decreases, the width of the waveguide on the external substrate increases. In one embodiment, these two waveguides form an adiabatic structure where the optical signal transfers between the waveguides with minimal or no coupling of the optical signal to other non-intended modes. Using the two waveguides, optical signals can be transmitted between the photonic chip and the external substrate.
