  • Patent number: 9051821
Abstract: Example microfluidic methods and apparatus to perform in situ chemical detection are disclosed. A disclosed example downhole apparatus comprises a microfluidic chamber to introduce a microfluidic-scale drop of a reagent into a formation fluid to form a mixed fluid, a flowline to fluidly couple the formation fluid from a geologic formation to the microfluidic chamber, and a detector to measure a property of the mixed fluid, the property representative of a presence of a chemical in the formation fluid.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 15, 2008
Date of Patent: June 9, 2015
    Assignee: Schlumberger Technology Corporation
Inventors: Wei Heong Tan, Christopher Harrison, Tsutomu Yamate
  • Patent number: 8513165
Abstract: There is provided a planar lipid bilayer array formed by microfluidic technique and a method of analysis using the planar lipid bilayers, providing the advantages such as portability, decreased analysis time, a smaller amount of required reagents, and parallel automation with high reproducibility. The planar lipid bilayer array formed by microfluidic technique is a planar lipid bilayer array formed by microfluidic technique (PDMS device) 1 saturated with water by preliminarily immersing in water, comprising microchannels 2 connected to an inlet of a microfluidic channel and arranged in parallel, and microchambers 3 having apertures on both sides of the microchannel 2.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 26, 2008
Date of Patent: August 20, 2013
    Assignee: The University of Tokyo
Inventors: Shoji Takeuchi, Hiroaki Suzuki, Sadao Ota, Wei-Heong Tan
  • Patent number: 8109143
Abstract: Methods and related systems are described for a sealed housing for downhole transducers. The housing system includes a housing body and a transducer positioned within the housing body, and one or more flexible members sealably mounted on the housing body. The flexible members each have one or more undulations which facilitate movement of the flexible member in directions primarily perpendicular to the surface of the flexible member. The dimensions of the one or more undulations are designed so as to optimize the ability of the movements of the member thereby accommodating volume changes in the sealed housing. A substantial amount of compensating material can also be positioned within the housing body. The compensating material has a coefficient of thermal expansion substantially less than that of the housing material.
