  • Patent number: 10324262
Abstract: An assembly for splicing first and second optical fibers is contemplated. The assembly typically comprises a splicing member disposed within a barrel member. A first optical fiber can be inserted through a first end of the barrel member, and a second optical fiber can be inserted through a second end of the barrel member to splice ends of the first and second optical fibers in the splicing member. A recess at the second end of the barrel can be used to lock the second optical cable, and a clamping member can be used to hold the second optical fiber. An optical fiber stub holder can couple the first end of the barrel member and an optical fiber stub from which the first optical fiber extends. Thus, the first and second optical fibers can be effectively secured in a splicing relationship using the assembly.

  • Patent number: 7883275
Abstract: A three rod bundle confined inside a sleeve is constructed as a light guiding fiber mechanical splicing device which is stiff, strong and precise, with no moving parts. The design also applies to splicing fibers to pre-polished optical connectors through a built-in model of this innovative mechanical splicer. Applying the Soddy circles formula and using a bin approach assists in deriving the exact rod sizes needed and sleeve bore size to accommodate the three-rod bundle, so that this apparatus can be properly designed to guide any size of light guide fibers and studs with minimum clearance. Rods of varying diameters are sorted into bins and chosen based upon the aperture desired, thus eliminating the need for tight tolerance of the diameters of the three rods. This unique design allows for construction of a precision virtual hole of very long depth, which enables two optical fiber studs to butt against each other with a core to core misalignment of less than 1 um for single mode fiber optics cables.

  • Patent number: 6878040
Abstract: This invention pertains to methods and apparatus for polishing and planarization of workpieces, such as fiber optics connectors, metallographic samples, semiconductor wafers, microelectronic substrate, optical devices and the like. The polishing pattern is a hypotrochoid generated by a spur gear rotating inside of an internal gear. The hypotrochoid is a superior polishing pattern because it not only provides a pattern similar to a figure eight pattern for producing optimal polishing conditions, but it also appears to precess around the center of the polishing space and maximize the utilization of the polishing pad or film.

  • Patent number: 6549372
Abstract: A hard disk drive assembly which includes a limiter plate that is attached to an actuator arm. The limiter plate limits a movement of a flexure arm that is attached to a head. The head is coupled to a disk. The limiter plate limits the distance that the head can move away from the disk. Limiting the movement of the head may reduce the impact force associated with the head slapping the disk.

  • Patent number: 4856317
Abstract: A system and method for initializing and calibrating a fiber optic pressure transducer so that a measured intensity of light which varies as a function of pressure can be accurately translated to the value of pressure which produces that value of light intensity. The transducer includes an enclosed sensor tip having a diaphragm which is exposed to atmospheric pressure on the inside and the pressure to be determined on the outside as measurements are taken, the resulting pressure differential producing a related attenuation in light intensity. Calibration according to the present invention is performed by exposing the diaphragm to atmospheric pressure on the outside and sub-atmospheric pressure on the inside while transmitting light through the fiber in the usual manner. The sub-atmospheric pressure is changed gradually as simultaneous measurements are made of the intensity of light returned through the fiber and the actual value of the sub-atmospheric pressure at a number of discrete times.
