  • Patent number: 5635393
Abstract: The present invention relates to a biological method for dechlorinating polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) by inoculating a polychlorinated biphenyl containing sample with PCB dechlorinating anaerobic methanogenic granules. The granules are made by coculturing particles of a PCP-dechlorinating methanogenic microbial consortia and a PCB-dechlorinating microorganism under anaerobic conditions in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (USAB) reactor.

  • Patent number: 5386872
Abstract: A refinery petroleum gas recovery apparatus driven by normally wasted heat, comprising primarily the cooling system, the heat exchanging petroleum gas recovery system, and the appropriate peripheral equipment, wherein the wasted heat from the refining process is used as a power source for creating a vacuum cooling function to cool the water being heat exchanged with the petroleum gas down to the temperature of 12.degree.-13.degree. C. The heat in the gas is removed and the gas is condensed into liquid for reuse. The petroleum gases ethane, propane etc. which are ordinarily burned in the torch tower can now be recovered for reuse. The air pollution created from the burning of the gases in the torch tower is eliminated. Thus the apparatus has a high industrial value.

  • Patent number: 5269310
Abstract: A method and apparatus for determining arterial blood pressures using a photoplethysmograph is provided. In the inventive method the photoplethysmograph output is calibrated to the patient using an auxiliary blood pressure determining instrument, a constant k particular to the patient's arterial blood pressure-volume relationship is determined and is stored for later use; at the time of measurement information is obtained from the photoplethysmograph output; and a computer determines the patient's systolic and diastolic blood pressures.

  • Patent number: 5251595
Abstract: The rotor engine of the present invention includes air compressing components and engine components provided with a combustion chamber. One of the air-compressing components is rotor air-compressing and the other is piston air compressing. Air intake grooves are cut into the air-compressing rotor, and expansion grooves are cut into the engine rotor. Abutments are radially located at the position of the air-compressing rotor and the engine rotor, which divide the air intake groove and expansion groove into volume varying chambers. A gas shield disk is fitted between the air-compressing rotor and engine rotor, and end seals are fitted at the two ends of these two rotors. As a result of this construction, air-intaking, compressing and work-doing, exhausting are completed in the air-compressing components and work components respectively.

  • Patent number: 5149577
Abstract: A dual purpose stencil-forming sheet is provided comprising an ink-pervious fibrous tissue base having an ink-impervious impregnant therethrough, which impregnant is relatively non-bleeding and contains a red pigment. In a composite where the stencil-forming sheet is in contact with a white or pastel underlying backing sheet, the striking of a key or pin onto the stencil-forming sheet through a black inked ribbon simultaneously cuts the stencil, leaves a black marking on the cut stencil and leaves a red marking on the white or pastel backing sheet.

  • Patent number: 5107123
Abstract: Provided is an ultraviolet radiation device useful to measure intensity of the ultraviolet radiation in a selected environment which has an optical-electrical converter having an optical means for expanding an ultraviolet radiation input angle of the converter, a temperature sensor and an electrical signal conditioner having means to generate an ultraviolet intensity signal which is independent of ambient temperature. A preferred device is for personal use and permits allocation of measured daily doses of solar ultraviolet radiation over multiple days to provide a predetermined total cumulative amount of ultraviolet radiation and a desired tanning of skin during sunbathing. The preferred device issues a signal when the daily allocated dose is reached. The invention also provides by using the device of the invention a process to determine prevailing ultraviolet radiation levels and cumulative amounts and a controlled process for tanning.

  • Patent number: 5042975
Abstract: This invention relates to development of an iontotherapeutic device for regulated transdermal systemic administration of ionizable pharmaceutical compounds. It also provides an iontotherapeutic process for transdermal administration of ionized pharmaceuticals, particularly those which are otherwise transdermally absorbed to a small degree or not all, such as peptide pharmaceuticals, for example, insulins. The invention also relates to unit dose forms, for example, those in which an ionized pharmaceutical is dispersed in a hydrophilic polymer. The unit dose is adapted to be assembled as part of the pharmaceutical reservoir electrode, so that the ionized pharmaceutical will be delivered transdermally and then be absorbed systemically when the iontotherapeutic device is in operation.

  • Patent number: 4856317
Abstract: A system and method for initializing and calibrating a fiber optic pressure transducer so that a measured intensity of light which varies as a function of pressure can be accurately translated to the value of pressure which produces that value of light intensity. The transducer includes an enclosed sensor tip having a diaphragm which is exposed to atmospheric pressure on the inside and the pressure to be determined on the outside as measurements are taken, the resulting pressure differential producing a related attenuation in light intensity. Calibration according to the present invention is performed by exposing the diaphragm to atmospheric pressure on the outside and sub-atmospheric pressure on the inside while transmitting light through the fiber in the usual manner. The sub-atmospheric pressure is changed gradually as simultaneous measurements are made of the intensity of light returned through the fiber and the actual value of the sub-atmospheric pressure at a number of discrete times.
