    Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for non-repeating random number generation, and to an apparatus for reading from and or writing to recording media using such a method. According to the invention, a method for random number generation for the selection of an item from a list of items includes the steps of: randomising a number X, where X is in the range from ‘1’ to the number ‘M’ of not yet selected items from the list of items; traversing the list of items to find the X-positioned unselected item; and outputting the X-positioned unselected item.
