    Abstract: Provided are sulfated pillararenes and methods of making and using same. The pillararenes have macrocycle core having a plurality of aryl groups, attached (e.g., covalently bonded) in a para orientation to the adjacent methylene groups. The pillararenes have a hydrophobic cavity. The hydrophobic cavity may be used to sequester various materials or to deliver materials sequestered therein.
