  • Patent number: 11677123
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a battery includes introducing a first material to the battery, providing an anode, a cathode and a separator of the battery; and assembling the anode, the separator and the cathode. The first material is configured and arranged to increase the internal impedance of the battery upon mechanical or thermal loading.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 1, 2020
Date of Patent: June 13, 2023
Assignee: The Regents of the University of California
Inventors: Yu Qiao, Weiyi Lu, Yang Shi, Anh V. Le
  • Publication number: 20220117345
Abstract: An energy absorbing apparatus includes particles with nanopores in a liquid. A further aspect employs a reusable energy absorbing apparatus including gas-liquid interactions in nanopores. Another aspect of the present apparatus uses oversolubility of gas in a solution to enhance bubble nucleation in hydrophobic nanopores or nanochannels, which suppresses gas outflow while promoting liquid outflow from particles. Still another aspect includes anions within an aqueous electrolytic solution, containing nanoporous material therein.

  • Patent number: 10115942
Abstract: A battery system includes a load bearing structure having battery cells, or structures formed by battery cells, and at least one mechanical switch, and an electrical connection coupled with the battery cells of the load bearing structure. A battery has a rate-sensitive component that is configured to deform into a first state to provide a first reaction force under a mechanical loading of a first magnitude. The rate-sensitive component is configured to deform into a second state to provide a second reaction force under a mechanical loading of a second magnitude.

  • Publication number: 20180179357
Abstract: A composition includes hydrogel and nanoporous particles having an internal cavity without any liquid therein in an ambient condition. In another aspect, a hybrid hydrogel includes particles having vacant or liquid-free internal cavities in a first condition and allowing entry of a liquid in a second condition, to absorb impact energy. A further aspect employs particle pores into which hydrogel liquid flows when impacted. Moreover, another aspect of the present hydrogel and nanoporous particle composite is used in biomedical inserts, stretchable biometric sensors, vehicular armor, wearable helmets or armored garments, or padded vehicular interior components such as seats, headrests, instrument panels or door trim panels.
