  • Patent number: 4374752
Abstract: A catalyst mixture is made with improved activity and selectivity to acetaldehyde by using an inert diluent and specifically defined concentrations of cobalt, a halide, a trivalent phosphorus compound, and the inert diluent. Use of the trivalent phosphorus compound significantly inhibits corrosion of the reactor metal.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 30, 1981
Date of Patent: February 22, 1983
    Assignee: Union Carbide Corporation
Inventors: Benny J. Argento, Wellington E. Walker, deceased, Rocco A. Fiato
  • Patent number: 4337365
Abstract: A process for the production of acetaldehyde from the cobalt-catalyzed, iodide-promoted reaction of methanol, hydrogen and carbon monoxide, attaining (a) selectivity to acetaldehyde heretofore unachievable and (b) high methanol conversion, wherein the reaction is carried out in an inert solvent at a temperature of from 100.degree. C. to 180.degree. C. with an iodide to cobalt mole ratio of from 2:1 to 100:1.
