  • Patent number: 7181826
Abstract: A system and method are provided for manufacturing a magnetic head. Initially, a coil structure, a first pole layer, and a gap layer are formed. A second pole layer is then deposited to form a pair of flanking portions flanking a central portion of the second pole layer. Thereafter, the second pole layer is masked with a photoresist layer. During manufacture, the flanking portions of the second pole layer work in conjunction with the photoresist layer to substantially protect the coil structure from damage.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 10, 2004
Date of Patent: February 27, 2007
Assignee: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands B.V.
Inventors: Wenchein Hsiao, Edward Hin Pong Lee, Bradley D. Webb
  • Patent number: 7170713
Abstract: An effective heat sink is provided for a magnetic recording head. The heat sink conducts heat away from the recording head thus limiting the range of temperatures to which the recording head is subjected. A heat sink on a recording head significantly reduces heat induced protrusion.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 8, 2002
Date of Patent: January 30, 2007
Assignee: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands B.V.
Inventors: Savas Gider, Wenchein Hsiao, Vladimir Nikitin

  • Patent number: 6785098
Abstract: A write head has a variable throat height wherein the throat height is dependent upon the frequency of operation of the write head. At high frequency operation the throat height is small and at low frequency operation the throat height is large. The write head writes hard into a circular track of a rotating magnetic disk at all frequencies but not overly hard at low frequencies thereby avoiding excessive erase bands and adjacent track interference (ATI) on each side of the track being written.

Date of Patent: August 31, 2004
    Assignee: International Business Machines Corporation

  • Patent number: 6687083
Abstract: An low profile inductive write head is provided to improve track definition and head efficiency and to reduce overcoat and pole tip protrusion and cracking caused by thermal expansion. A first insulation layer of an insulation stack enclosing the coil layer is formed of an non-magnetic inorganic insulator material such as aluminum oxide, silicon dioxide or titanium dioxide having a thickness of in the range of 0.2-0.3 microns. The thinner first insulation layer results in a significantly reduced slope of the insulation stack which decreases reflective notching during processing of the second pole tip to improve track definition. Improved thermal conduction properties of the inorganic insulator material improves heat sinking of the write coil reducing overcoat and pole tip protrusion and cracking at the pole tip/write gap layer interface.
