  • Patent number: 6325191
Abstract: The invention relates to a hydrodynamic torque converter including a turbine wheel arranged inside of a housing, a torque converter lockup clutch, an axially mounted piston, a torsional vibration damper and a hub. The turbine wheel and the piston are rotationally fixed to the input component of the damper. The input component is connected to the hub by means of a connection provided with a circumferential backlash. The output component of the damper is connected to the hub without circumferential backlash.

  • Patent number: 6193037
Abstract: A hydrodynamic torque converter wherein the housing is connected to the output element of an engine in the power train of a motor vehicle and receives a coaxial hub which is rotatable by the turbine wheel in the housing or by a clutch disk forming part of a lockup clutch and being axially movably but non-rotatably mounted on the hub. The lockup clutch further comprises a piston which is rotatably and axially movably mounted on the hub, and a laimina which is non-rotatably but axially movably mounted in the housing and extends radially inwardly between the piston and the clutch disk. The clutch is engaged when the piston is moved axially of the housing to thus urge the lamina against the clutch disk and to thus bias the clutch disk against an adjacent wall of the housing so that the clutch disc then transmits torque between the housing and the hub to thus bypass the torque transmitting connection between the housing and the hub by way of a satator wheel in the housing and the turbine wheel.

  • Patent number: 6142272
Abstract: The invention relates to hydrodynamic torque converter (1) comprising a turbine wheel (3) arranged inside of a housing (2), a torque converter lockup clutch (10), an axially mounted piston (6), a torsional vibration damper (20) and a hub (5). The turbine wheel (3) and the piston (6) are rotationally fixed to the input component (21) of said damper (20). The input component (21) is connected to the hub (5) by means of a connection (52) provided with circumferential backlash. The output component (22) of the damper (20) is connected to the hub (5) without circumferential backlash.

  • Patent number: 5860500
Abstract: The rotary output element of a hydrokinetic torque converter can receive torque with limited play from the turbine or directly from the housing by way of a damper which operates in series with a lockup clutch. The lockup clutch can be engaged to transmit torque from the housing of the torque converter to the damper and the latter then transmits torque to the output element.

  • Patent number: 5771998
Abstract: A force or torque transmitting apparatus which transmits torque from the output element of a prime mover to the input element of a transmission or another driven unit in a motor vehicle by way of a hydrokinetic torque converter and/or by way of a lockup clutch. When the vehicle embodying the apparatus is coasting, the housing of the torque converter is engaged only by the friction lining on the axially movable piston of the lockup clutch when the latter is engaged, either entirely or with slip. Thus, it is not necessary to provide one or more thrust bearings between the piston of the lockup clutch and the housing of the torque converter.
