  • Publication number: 20060062470
Abstract: A mechanism for inputting handwritten mathematical expressions into a computer is described. A user interface includes an input area that receives strokes corresponding to a handwritten mathematical expression, a result display area that displays a mathematical expression recognition result corresponding to the strokes, and a tool area that allows a user to select various tools for operation within the input area and/or the result display area. The mathematical expression recognized result corresponds to a best match to the strokes received from a mathematical expression recognition system. Another interface element allows a user to see the availability of alternative mathematical expression recognition candidates. An additional input feature allows a user to input the mathematical expression recognized result into an application program.

  • Publication number: 20050128181
Abstract: Systems, methods, and computer-readable media for processing electronic ink receive an electronic ink input; convert the electronic ink input to a first machine-generated object using handwriting recognition; display the first machine-generated object on a display; receive speech input; convert the speech input to a second machine-generated object using speech recognition; generate a list of machine-generated objects based on the electronic ink input, the list including the first machine-generated object and alternative machine-generated objects and functioning as a dictionary for converting the speech input; and replace the first machine-generated object with the second machine-generated object. The machine-generated objects may correspond to words, lines, and/or other groupings of machine-generated text. A user may confirm that the second machine-generated object should replace the first machine-generated object and the system will perform the replacement.

  • Patent number: 6529217
Abstract: A method for graphically displaying a set of data fields includes creating a graphical display of a set of data fields through the use of icons and drop areas. To graphically display the data fields, a user first selects a range of data points, grouped into data fields, to be included in the graphical display. A list of icons corresponding to each of the data fields is then generated. A graph template is displayed, comprising a set of drop areas and a field list. The icons are displayed within the field list. Each drop area displays a watermark and may receive a number of icons. A user may drag and drop an icon from the field list into any one of the drop areas, which causes the data field associated with that icon to be graphically displayed in a manner dependent on the drop area.

  • Patent number: 6304981
Abstract: A system for effecting a shutdown of a networked information handling system automatically determines the time interval required for the information handling system to reach a safe shutdown by continually calculating the time interval necessary to store all volatile information to non-volatile locations and shut down the system. In order to calculate the time interval, heuristics may be determined for various operating systems, applications, application environments, etc. Integration of the system of the present invention may be determined by a particular condition, configuration, and/or environment at any given period of time, and may, for example, be incorporated in environments such as a UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply) environment or a fault tolerant CPU (Central Processor Unit) shutdown environment.
