  • Publication number: 20130148058
Abstract: An electronic device may have a liquid crystal display with backlight structures. The backlight structures may produce backlight that passes through display layers in the display. The display layers may include color filter elements, a liquid crystal layer, and a thin-film transistor layer. The backlight structures may have a light guide plate with opposing first and second edges. The light guide plate and other display layers may be assembled within support structures such as a metal chassis and a plastic chassis. A first strip of light-emitting diodes may be attached to the first edge of the light guide plate in a position that is floating with respect to the metal chassis. A second strip of light-emitting diodes may be attached to the second edge of the light guide plate in a position that is fixed with respect to the metal chassis.

  • Patent number: 8022615
Abstract: A self emission device (644) that emits light (526). The self emission device can include at least one light emission layer (104) encompassing an area, and generating light over such area in a distributed fashion. The self emission device also can include a first electrode (113) interfacing with a first side (116) of the light emission layer and a second electrode (114) interfacing with a second side (117) of the light emission layer. The first electrode and the second electrode can provide energy used by the light emission layer to illuminate. The self emission device can be a component of a display (100) comprising a reflective display panel (102).

  • Patent number: 6487335
Abstract: System and method for wavelength discrimination using a DWDM (N+1)-stage cascade tree structure with distributed filtering to provide acceptable optical isolation and acceptable flat-top wavelength response. Each channel has a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) that provides wavelength discrimination. The input channel includes an inverted Fabry-Perot etalon (FPE) filter or an inverted, non-symmetric MZI filter that helps provide a desired flat-top response. Each channel in a second stage has a selected conventional MZI filter, and each channel in a third stage has a selected FPE filter, to help provide the desired optical isolation. The number of output channels may be 32, 64 or more.

  • Patent number: 6404521
Abstract: System and method for wavelength discrimination using a DWDM (N+1)-stage fiber optic cascade tree structure with additional filtering to provide acceptable flat-top passband response, and to provide acceptable optical isolation when combined with a multilayer thin film filter. Each channel in a DWDM cascade tree structure has a conventional Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) that provides wavelength discrimination. Each channel in at least one stage has an additional filter that is either (1) an inverted Fabry-Perot etalon (FPE) or (2) an inverted, non-symmetric MZI. The number of output channels may be 32, 64, 128 or more.
