Abstract: A method of making a connecting rod for an internal combustion engine having a one-piece crankshaft construction generally consisting of positioning a first crankpin bushing segment having a connecting rod shank consisting of a reinforced resinous material mounted thereon, on a crankpin of the crankshaft, positioning a second crankpin bushing segment on the crankpin, and applying a reinforcing material and a resinous material about a periphery of the connecting rod shank and the second crankpin bushing segment to form an integral unit consisting of the crankpin bushing segments embedded in the connecting rod shank, attached to the crankpin.

Abstract: A turbocharged engine system has an internal-combustion engine whose exhaust gases drive a turbine at a speed generally proportional to the exhaust-gas pressure. This turbine in turn drives a supercharger that feeds air to the engine intake at a pressure that is generally proportional to the turbine speed. A bypass valve connected across the turbine is opened above a predetermined engine speed to shunt the exhaust gases around the turbine and thereby prevent excessive supercharging of the engine. The pressure of the engine exhaust gases is, however, decreased steadily and proportionately with increasing engine speed above a predetermined second engine speed to operate the engine with an intake-manifold pressure that is slightly below that at which knocking would occur for increased horsepower output.

Abstract: An engine has a plurality of cylinders each having an exhaust-gas output. An exhaust-gas turbocharger has a plurality of exhaust-gas inlets which are connected via respective exhaust-gas conduits to the outlets of the cylinders, with each conduit connected to one or more of the cylinders. A vent conduit connects at least one of the exhaust-gas conduits to the output side of the exhaust-gas turbocharger and is provided with a valve that releases pressure in the respective conduit when pressure in the exhaust system or engine speed exceeds a predetermined limit. Furthermore this one conduit is of restricted flow-cross-section so that at low engine speed the gas velocity in the conduit is high for driving the turbocharger, but at high engine speed pressure is relieved to prevent overdriving of the turbocharger.
