Abstract: A stable, aged composition suitable for depositing a coating by electrophoresis comprising an aqueous dispersion of a mixture of from about 2% to about 60%, by weight, of (A) polymeric substantially water-insoluble, substantially fully etherified polymethylol melamines or guanamines and correspondingly from about 98% to about 40%, by weight, of (B) a water dispersible non-gelled polymeric material carrying an ionic charge which polymeric material contains at least one class of reactive groups, alcoholic hydroxy groups and amide groups wherein the amount of said groups is at least about 3%, by weight, and not more than about 30%, by weight, based on the total weight of said polymeric material wherein said groups are heat reactive with (A) wherein said percentages of (A) and (B), by weight, total 100% and are based on the total solids weight of (A) and (B).

Abstract: The disclosure relates to a composition of matter comprising a blend of an ungelled modified cross-linking agent, certain water-dispersible non-gelled polymeric materials carrying a cationic charge and an acid solubilizer in certain stated proportions. The disclosure also relates to the use of these compositions of matter in the process of electrodepositing films on an electrically conductive surface which comprises passing an electric current between a cathode comprising said surface and an electrically conductive anode immersed in an aqueous dispersion of said composition.

Abstract: A modified cationic vinyl polymer prepared by the copolymerization of a polymerizable styrene, maleic anhydride and an alkyl acrylate, which polymer is then reacted with certain amino alcohols and/or certain difunctional amines containing a tertiary nitrogen atom followed by reaction with certain monoepoxy compounds. The modified vinyl polymer finds utility in electrocoating applications, particularly for anodic-soluble metals, such as copper and copper alloys wherein the vinyl polymer, in amounts varying between about 40% and 95%, by weight, is combined with about 4.0% to about 50%, by weight, of a substantially fully etherified, substantially fully methylolated aminotriazine cross-linking agent and from about 1% to about 20%, by weight, of a neutralizing agent such as a mineral acid or an organic acid in an aqueous dispersion.

The disclosure also relates to a composition for electrocoating metals comprising an aqueous dispersion of a mixture of certain resinous reaction products of certain guanamine or malamine derivatives that have been reacted with certain hydroxy alkylated phenolic compounds blended with certain water-dispersible, non-gelled polymeric materials carrying an anionic charge which polymeric materials are heat reactive with said resinous reaction products.
