Patent number: 5718952Abstract: A stiff elongated hollow structural member has a double-walled structure in the shape of a tube made of an interior tube which has an annular cross-section and an exterior tube which has a different cross-section, in a concentric arrangement. The interior and exterior tubes bound a hollow space filled with an incompressible liquid. Responsive to pressure increases in the liquid, the exterior tube in the elastic material range is bendingly deformable in the direction of a ring-circular cross-section or to a ring-circular cross-section. This hollow structural member can be used as an adjustable stiffness torsion member such as a vehicle steering shaft. Another disclosed adjustable stiffness hollow structural member includes a flat plate facing a corrugated plate to form a hollow space for the incompressible liquid. Increases in pressure of the liquid forces the corrugated member to a more flattened configuration.Type: GrantFiled: October 17, 1994Date of Patent: February 17, 1998Assignee: Deutsche Aerospace AHInventors: Werner Zimmermann, Hans-Friedrich Siegling, Willi Martin, Klaus Drechsler

Patent number: 5267546Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling the flow of fuel for a gasoline or diesel gasoline engine controls a solenoid valve for actuating the fuel pump. A pump piston is driven by the camshaft and, in turn, pressurizes the fuel for delivery to the individual cylinders. Based on the operation of the solenoid valve, the beginning of the injection of fuel and the end of the injection of fuel are established Based upon spaced angular markings on the camshaft, a control unit determines the trigger signals for actuating the solenoid valve. To calculate the trigger signals, the markings on the camshaft are counted and interpolated therebetween over time. The interpolation is based on the instantaneous rotational speed N of the camshaft, which is sensed immediately before performing the interpolation.Type: GrantFiled: May 21, 1992Date of Patent: December 7, 1993Assignee: Robert Bosch GmbHInventors: Hans-Joachim Siebert, Nestor Rodriguez-Amaya, Joachim Tauscher, Herbert Graf, Werner Zimmermann, Alfred Schmitt, Pierre Lauvin, Anton Karle

Patent number: 5131371Abstract: The invention is directed to a method and arrangement for controlling a self-igniting internal combustion engine. The arrangement includes at least one measured-value sensor, electronic control unit for forming a quantity signal for metering fuel, and a control unit for driving individual actuators for each cylinder. The actuators determine the quantity of fuel injected by the pump elements into the cylinders. Under specific conditions, a corrective unit is activated which determines corrective values specific to the cylinders for making the cylinders equal. The open-loop control unit applies the metering signal to the actuators in dependence upon the quantity signal and the corrective values.Type: GrantFiled: September 7, 1990Date of Patent: July 21, 1992Assignee: Robert Bosch GmbHInventors: Josef Wahl, Alf Loffler, Hermann Grieshaber, Wilhelm Polach, Ewald Eblen, Joachim Tauscher, Helmut Laufer, Ulrich Flaig, Johannes Locher, Manfred Birk, Gerhard Engel, Alfred Schmitt, Pierre Lauvin, Fridolin Piwonka, Anton Karle, Hermann Kull, Werner Zimmermann

Patent number: 5042434Abstract: The invention is directed to a control apparatus cooling system which includes a control apparatus arrangement for an internal combustion engine. The control apparatus arrangement is set into operation by an ignition contact signal. The control apparatus arrangement is cooled with the aid of a coolant loop which has a pump motor. A self-holding circuit is provided in the control apparatus arrangement and supplies the pump motor and a voltage stabilization with voltage to drive a microcomputer as soon as the ignition contact signal appears. The cooling of the control apparatus arrangement is not terminated immediately when the ignition contact signal ceases; instead, the pump motor continues to run until it is assured that components having conventional temperature resistance cannot become damaged in the control apparatus arrangement by overheating because of stored heat. The microcomputer determines when the switch-off condition is satisfied.Type: GrantFiled: May 7, 1990Date of Patent: August 27, 1991Assignee: Robert Bosch GmbHInventors: Herbert Graf, Jurgen Schwenger, Werner Zimmermann, Johannes Locher

Patent number: 4489611Abstract: Materials and structural components having irregular shapes may be tested two ultrasonic testing heads which are movable in unison in the direction in which the cross-section of the material or component being tested changes. The synchroneously moving testing heads are spaced from each other in a direction extending across the moving direction. The testing heads are ultrasonic receivers connected with their outputs to a comparing device which provides an error signal when the amplitude ratio of the received signal changes. The amplitude ratio is formed between the amplitudes of the ultrasonic signals received by both testing heads. Preferably, the comparing device comprises an amplifier which amplifies the amplitude of the received second signal by an amplification factor which is proportional to a deviation of the amplitude of the received first signal from a reference value. The error signal is recorded, for example, by a coordinate plotter.Type: GrantFiled: January 20, 1983Date of Patent: December 25, 1984Assignee: Messerschmitt-Boelkow-Blohm Gesellschaft mit beschraenkter HaftungInventors: Werner Zimmermann, Helmar Langer
