    Abstract: A method is disclosed for generating a calibration target on a medium. The method can include the operation of inserting the medium into a printer with a first orientation. A further operation can be printing a first calibration feature at a first lateral location on the medium. Another operation can be reinserting the medium into the printer with a second orientation rotated 180 degrees from the first orientation. A second calibration feature can be printed at a second lateral location on the medium.

    Abstract: When a printer is connected to conventional office power, i.e.. 110 VAC service, it automatically operates in “slowdown-capable” mode. In such a “slowdown-capable” mode, as the printer works harder, it may slow down and reduce performance when there is not enough energy available from the input power source. When the same printer is connected to 220 Volt (or higher) service, it automatically senses this higher input power availability and allows the printer to draw more power from the input, always operating at its highest performance mode to complete the jobs as efficiently as possible. Thus, the printer operates at its highest performance level taking in to consideration the minimum amount of power available and amount of power necessary.

    Abstract: An electronic printer having wireless power and communications connections to accessory units to which it is adjacent and with which it is in contact during operation is disclosed. Communications between the printer and the accessory unit, instead of being handled via a cable connection, are achieved using a two-way, infrared (IR) communications link. Power is supplied to the accessory via inductive coupling rather than directly through power cables. As inductive coupling works efficiently only over very short distances, the accessory unit is equipped with a standby battery power so that the accessory may be temporarily separated from the printer (e.g., in order to eliminate media jams) without loss of accessory status data. When the accessory is once again positioned immediately adjacent the printer, the inductive coupling reassumes the role of power provision.
