    Abstract: Molybdenum hexacarbonyl is prepared by carbonylating diammonium oxopentachloromolybdate (V) (NH.sub.4).sub.2 (MoOCl.sub.5) at pressures up to about 2000 psig and temperatures up to about 150.degree. C. in a solvent such as tetrahydrofuran, using a metallic reductant such as magnesium and an oxygen scavenger such as aluminum trichloride.
