Abstract: Techniques for creating new connections on a social network using gestures. A server receives a first fingerprint of a gesture detected on a device of a first user. The gesture is indicative of the first user initializing a new social networking connection with a second user. The first fingerprint is matched to a second fingerprint received from the second user. In response to the matching, a connection is initiated between the first and second users on a social network in response to the matching. The user devices include an accelerometer to detect the gesture.

Abstract: Techniques for toggling sleep modes. A gesture associated with the mobile device that is in a first mode is detected. The can be gesture indicative of a user toggling the sleep mode of the mobile device from a first mode. Responsive to the gesture, the first mode can be switched to a second mode. In the second mode at least one component of the mobile device is either powered-up or powered-down.

Abstract: A consistent method of navigating across large data sets, particularly search results from search engines and play lists from media player devices is disclosed. Persistent navigation position markers provide the user with indication of current position in the data set. By using a click wheel which is provided on many mobile communication platforms, personal digital assistants and the like, simple operation is provided. Alternatively, a touch pad, touch screen and stylus, or thumb mouse may be used.
