Abstract: The present invention relates to new water-soluble polyquaternary compounds which are obtained by imidation of (A) specific alternating copolymers of maleic anhydride and olefines with (B) specific amines and (C) subsequent alkylation of the reaction product AB, the components (A) and (B) having the meaning given in the text of the Application. The invention furthermore relates to a process for the preparation of these water-soluble polyammonium compounds and their use as agents for improving the wet and dry tear strength of paper. The invention also relates to new intermediate products for the preparation of the compounds according to the invention.

Abstract: Water-soluble condensation products which are not self-crosslinking and are prepared from polyacidic amines and compounds which are polyfunctional towards amino groups, in an aqueous medium at temperatures from 0.degree. to 120.degree. C. and pH values above 6 in the presence of emulsifiers are used in the production of paper.

Abstract: Water-soluble amines which are not self-crosslinking and are obtainable by reacting(A) one or more water-soluble or water-dispersable amines containing amide groups, prepared by condensation of (a) 1 mol of dicarboxylic acid or functional derivatives thereof, (b) 0 to 30 mols of aminocarboxylic acids containing at least three C atoms, or lactams thereof, and (c) 1.4 to 30 mols of polyalkylenepolyamines of the general formula ##STR1## in which R denotes H or CH.sub.3,y is in each case the same or different and denotes the number 0 or 1 andx denotes a number from 4 to 15,and(B) compounds which are polyfunctional towards amino groups, are suitable as agents for increasing the retention of fibres, fillers and pigments, for accelerating drainage during the production of paper and for working up effluents from paper machines.

Abstract: Water-soluble polyalkylenepolyamines which are not self-crosslinking and contain quaternary dialkylammonium groups, and which are obtained by reaction of polyalkylenepolyamines of the general formula ##STR1## in which R denotes hydrogen or methyl,y denotes the number 0 or 1 and the y's may be identical or different andx denotes a number from 2 to 15,with bifunctional compounds of the general formula ##STR2## in which z denotes a number from 1 to 6 andR.sub.1 and R.sub.2 denote lower alkyl or lower hydroxyalkyl, are suitable for use as auxiliaries in the manufacture of paper.
