  • Patent number: 11408257
Abstract: A method to provide support within a wellbore includes underreaming a section of the wellbore at a depth spanning a layer of an unstable formation. The method also includes deploying a bistable structure within the wellbore at the depth of the layer of the unstable formation. Additionally, the method includes actuating an expandable packer within the bistable structure to expand the bistable structure in a radially outward direction from a longitudinal axis of the bistable structure. The bistable structure is in contact with walls of the underreamed section of the wellbore upon expanding in the radially outward direction.

  • Patent number: 9169724
Abstract: A downhole completion assembly for sealing and supporting an open hole section of a wellbore includes a first sealing structure having opposing first and second ends and being arranged within an open hole section of a wellbore, the first sealing structure being movable between a contracted configuration and an expanded configuration. A second sealing structure has opposing first and second ends and is arranged proximate the first sealing structure within the wellbore, the second sealing structure also being movable between a contracted configuration and an expanded configuration. When in their respective expanded configurations, the first and second sealing structures are frustoconical in shape and the first end of the second sealing structure is at least partially nested within the second end of the first sealing structure.

  • Patent number: 6375458
Abstract: Fabrication of metal medical instruments and devices from a shape memory alloy which provides greater flexibility in design and avoids the need for substantial cold working of the alloy which is required in other methods. The new process provides a ductile alloy for ease of forming and a unique heat treatment which renders the fabricated orthodontic and medical components highly elastic, with a high resistance to kinking and with good corrosion resistance. In addition, this new process produces orthodontic and medical components useful over the temperature range of from −20 to +40 degrees C.

  • Patent number: 6019860
Abstract: Method for fixing two elements together, in particular links (1) of a metal wristwatch strap, according to which a metal pin (2) made of a moulding memory alloy with large hysteresis--programmed such that it turns from the martensitic structure to the austenitic structure in a first temperature range which is situated above the service temperature of the elements and whereby its thickness increases, and such that it turns back from the austenitic structure to the martensitic structure in a second temperature range which is situated under the above-mentioned service temperature--is clamped in the martensitic structure in at least one either or not blind hole (3) in at least one of the elements to be linked; the pin (2) is subsequently heated to a temperature higher than the first temperature range, such that the thickness of the pin (2) is increased, whereby the clamping force of the pin (2) in the hole (3) becomes very large; and the pin (2) is finally cooled down to service temperature, characterized in that
