  • Patent number: 5494640
Abstract: A sensor device is disclosed for identification of a gaseous component in a gaseous or liquid sample. The sensor device comprises an optode membrane having sensitivity for the gaseous component to be identified. The optode membrane incorporates two ionophores, at least one of which is a chromoionophore capable of changing absorption spectrum. The sensor device further comprises a hydrophobic gas-permeable membrane, one side of which is positioned upon the optode membrane to prevent direct contact of the optode membrane with the liquid or gaseous sample while still permitting passage of the gaseous component to be identified. As a result, ionic compounds incapable of passing through the lipophilic gas-permeable membrane do not interfere with the identification process leading to a highly sensitive sensor.

  • Patent number: 5470755
Abstract: Hemiacetals are disclosed which correspond to the following formula II ##STR1## in which R' is an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic residue,Ar is an unsubstituted or substituted monocyclic or polycyclic aromatic or heteroaromatic residue andX.sup.1, X.sup.2 and X.sup.3 are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, fluoro, chloro, bromo and nitro, wherein however at least one of said substituents has to be selected from the stated halo atoms or nitro. The hemiacetals are formed reversibly from an alcohol and a corresponding keto compound and the hemiacetals of formula II differ from the corresponding keto compounds as to their light absorption in the ultraviolet, visible or infrared range, or a fluorescence or luminescence is created or quenched when the keto compound is converted into the hemiacetal of formula II. • Patent number: 5312986
Abstract: Hexacarboxylic acid hexa-amides are described which form new lipophilic magnesium complexes with magnesium ions. The hexa-amides are preferably novel compounds comprising three dicarboxylic acid diamide moieties interconnected to form a non-cyclic, monocyclic, bicyclic, tricyclic or polycyclic structure. Test devices such as test trips or ion-selective members are provided which contain hexacarboxylic acid hexa-amides as the ion-selective component. The test devices have a high selectivity for magnesium ions over alkali metal ions and other alkaline earth metal ions. Selectivity for magnesium ions over sodium and calcium ions permits determination of magnesium concentration in biological materials, including body fluids such as blood serum or whole blood. Magnesium concentration and activity can also be determined in sample solutions having a neutral or slightly acidic pH.

  • Patent number: 5167780
Abstract: The concentration ratio of lithium ions to sodium ions can be determined very accurately and excellently reproducible by using an electrode for the determination of lithium ions and an electrode for the determination of sodium ions and by contacting the ion sensitive members of said electrodes with the sample solution. The two electrodes are electrically connected via an instrument for the determination of the voltage and accordingly the potential difference .DELTA. V between said two electrodes is determined. From said potential difference the concentration ratio of lithium ions to sodium ions in the sample solution can be calculated. It is furthermore possible to connect electrically the lithium electrode as well as the sodium electrode via an instrument for the determination of the voltage with a single external reference-electrode or a common-electrode and then from the two measured potential differences the potential difference .DELTA.

  • Patent number: 5037968
Abstract: Keto compounds in which to the carbon atom in the neighboring position to the keto compounds there is bonded at least one strongly electron attracting substituent and/or in which there is conjugating with the carbon-oxygen-double bond of the keto group a .pi.-electron system have the ability of interacting selectively with the anions of oxa acids yielding adducts, chelates or complexes.Provided that in the corresponding keto compounds the keto group is a part of a chromophore, then the shifting of the absorption in the visible range or the ultraviolet range of the wave lengths is observed, compared with the corresponding absorption of the free keto compound. The corresponding keto compounds are used for the determination of the anions of the oxa acids and they e.g. can be the ion sensitive component of a corresponding ions sensitive part for the determination of said anions. Several of said keto compounds can be also used as color indicator for the anions of the oxa acids.

  • Patent number: 5032363
Abstract: Ion selective parts are described which comprise a polymeric material, an ion selective component and optionally furthermore a plasticizer and which ion sensitive parts are suited for the determination of the concentration or activity of ions in liquid media. The polymeric material of said ion sensitive parts is a copolymer in which 5-25 mol-% of the monomeric units of said copolymer are substituted with one or more hydrophilic substituents which are selected from the group comprising hydroxy groups, carboxylic acid groups, sulphonic acid groups and phosphonic acid groups. The inventive ion selective parts have, compared with corresponding ion selective parts in which the polymeric material is free of the stated hydrophilic groups or has a lower content of said hydrophilic groups, a better stability of the standard potential E.sub.o and a lower asymmetry potential or no asymmetry potential at all.

  • Patent number: 5023374
Abstract: Dicarboxylic acid diamides having the formula I ##STR1## wherein the radicals R are selected from hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl and alkynyl with up to 20 carbon atoms, have a high selectivity for lithium ions over other alkali metal ions and alkaline earth metal ions. Ion selective membranes and ion selective coatings as well as ion selective test devices, like e.g. test strips, which contain said compounds of formula I as ion selective component, can be used for the determination of lithium ions in liquid media. Said membranes and test devices are also suited for the determination of the concentration of lithium ions in biological fluids in which low concentrations of lithium ions and high concentrations of sodium ions are present, like the corresponding determination in blood serum or whole blood. The ion selective membranes have a period of life of several months even if they are frequently contacted with blood serum or blood.

  • Patent number: 4857573
Abstract: Plastic material compositions which comprise a plastic material matrix containing a benzhydrol-tetracarboxylic acid tetraester as a plasticizer are disclosed. The plasticizer is firmly anchored within the matrix such that migration of the plasticizer, and any other optionally present matrix components having a molecular weight of at least 100, are inhibited within the matrix. The plasticizer and matrix components are inhibited from eluting from the matrix when the matrix is brought in intimate contact with a liquid or solid material. These compositions are particularly useful as shaped bodies possessing highly elastic and adhesive characteristics.

  • Patent number: 4783496
Abstract: Shaped bodies of plastic material have a high elasticity and high adhesive characteristics if they contain, referred to the percentage of the plastic material of said shaped bodies, a higher percentage of a benzophenonetetracarboxylic acid tetraester. In said benzophenone-tetracartoxylate the ester forming alcohol component is an alkanol, alkenol or alkynol having 4-24 carbon atoms. The shaped bodies can be adhered to a substrate by pressing them onto it. The inventive shaped bodies are preferably strands, fibers, filaments or foils, for example foils for the packaging of products. Preferred shaped bodies are ion sensitive membranes for the determination of the concentration of ions and said membranes contain furthermore an ion selective component for the ion to be determined.Solutions of the inventive shaped bodies in a volatile organic solvent can be applied to a substrated and after the solvent is evaporated there remains on the substrate a firmly adherent elastic film.

  • Patent number: 3957607
Abstract: New lipide soluble complexes of cations like metal ions and ammonium ions are prepared by reacting an uncharged complex forming substance with the corresponding ions. Preferred uncharged complex forming substances are also new. The new lipide soluble complexes of cations have a wide field of application and those complexes, that is, the complex forming compounds can be used in membranes for the determination of the concentration of cations, like the ion sensitive members of measuring electrodes, or for the performance of an electro dialysis. Metal cations are generally insoluble in organic solvents and due to their solubility in organic solvents the new lipide soluble complexes of cations can be used in many fields of application, e.g. as catalysts for reactions which are performed in organic solvents.
