  • Publication number: 20060090030
Abstract: A storage device for recording and retrieving information blocks on a removable record carrier is described. Via an interface (44) the device receives commands, user data blocks and meta data blocks comprising file management information. The device has a non-volatile memory (31), a meta data block detection unit (47), and a control unit (20). The device temporarily stores the meta data blocks in the non-volatile memory until detecting an update condition, e.g. an eject command. The update condition indicates that the removable record carrier is to be updated to a state in which the record carrier is usable in a different storage device. In the event that the update condition has been detected the meta data blocks are transferred from the non-volatile memory to the record carrier (49).

  • Publication number: 20050235142
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of protecting user information against manipulations. In order to provide a high level of protection against any kind of manipulation without increasing the overhead significantly a method is proposed comprising the steps of: a) storing said user infonnation in user channel packets of a user channel, b) assigning state infonnation to said user channel packets said state infonnation being used to indicate if a user channel packet has been manipulated and/or is unstable or not, and c) storing said state information assigned to said user channel packets in an additional hidden channel embedded in said user channel, said state information assigned to a user channel packet being stored in the associated hidden channel packet. The invention relates further to a corresponding method of reading user information.

  • Publication number: 20050207323
Abstract: A device and method for recording data on a track (5) of a record carrier (1) are described. The record carrier (1) for use in such a device and method is also described. The record carrier (1) comprises two identical keylockers (7, 8). The keylockers contain encrypted information about the usage rights of the data on the record carrier (1). When these usage rights need to be updated, the keylockers are invalidated and new keylockers are written. Invalidating the old keylockers on a write once record carrier (1) can be done by a laser pulse with a high power level. However, data directly adjacent to the information that is invalidated becomes inaccessible. Therefore, only part of the keylockers (7, 8) is invalidated. This part needs to be an identical part of both keylockers (7, 8) so that the information of the whole keylocker cannot be restored.

  • Publication number: 20050005142
Abstract: There is disclosed a data carrier (20) having content (22) stored thereon. Access to the content (22) while on the data carrier (20) is controlled by a “copy limited” and “play never” right. This combination of rights allows the carrier (20) to be used, for example, as a jukebox loader. The content cannot be played from the carrier (20), but it can be copied to a jukebox (30) for playing in the jukebox (30). This can be used to provide a dedicated, reusable or throw-away jukebox loader disk that allows a provider to maintain control over the content (22), while allowing the end user sufficient freedom to use the content (22). The data carrier (20) may be embodied in a disk compatible with the CD2 format. A corresponding method of distributing content (22) is also disclosed.
