  • Patent number: 4328112
Abstract: An improved process for preparing a sulfur-containing composition useful as a lubricant additive wherein an organic carboxylic acid is sulfurized in the form of the acid or an ester or amide derivative thereof is disclosed. The improvement comprises using as the acid or acid portion of an ester or amide derivative, a carboxylic acid or mixture thereof obtained by telomerizing an ethylenically unsaturated compound under inert conditions in a reaction medium containing from about 10.sup.-3 to about 10.sup.-10 moles per liter of an at least trivalent manganese compound and one or more carbonyl compounds having at least one hydrogen atom on an alpha-carbon atom wherein at least 60 percent by weight of the total carbonyl-containing compound content is present as carboxylic anhydride and the molar ratio of the reacted quantity of ethylenically unsaturated compounds to the at least trivalent manganese compound is at least 4.

  • Patent number: 4323495
Abstract: Novel branched-chain monoalcohols and derivatives thereof are disclosed. Such derivatives are selected from the group consisting of(a) esters of aromatic, aliphatic or cycloaliphatic acids having at least 2 carbon atoms and 1, 2 or 3 carboxyl groups;(b) urethanes of aromatic, aliphatic or cycloaliphatic isocyanates;(c) monoethers of polyalkylene oxide glycols having 2 to 50 alkylene oxide units each containing 2 or 3 carbon atoms and the alkylpolyoxyalkylene sulfates derived therefrom;(d) sulfates. The branched-chain monoalcohols are obtained by reduction of branched-chain monocarboxylic acids or esters thereof. Said acids are telomeric acids obtained by the free radical addition of 1 mole of acetic anhydride to at least three moles of hexene and/or higher olefins containing up to 30 or more carbon atoms (C.sub.30+) in the presence of a trivalent manganese compound. The products of this invention are suitable for use in engine lubricating oils, lubricant compositions for polymers and wax compositions.

  • Patent number: 4322570
Abstract: An addition product of a chlorinated methane containing at least 3 chlorine atoms and an ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbon is prepared by heating at about 70.degree. to about 250.degree. C. in the presence of a manganese compound in which the manganese has a valence of at least 3 as a radical initiator, and a compound containing a carbonyl group the free ligands of which compounds are at either side linked to a carbon atom, such as an aliphatic ketone.

  • Patent number: 4293345
Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a wax composition for entirely or partly replacing carnauba wax or montan wax. The composition consists substantially of one or more acids and or derivatives thereof selected from the group consisting of(a) esters of phenols or aromatic, aliphatic or cycloaliphatic alcohols having at least 1 to 10 primary or secondary hydroxyl groups;(b) amides of ammonia or aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic amines having at least 1 to 15 primary or secondary amino groups;(c) salts of alkali metals or alkaline earth metals, amphoteric metals, heavy metals, of ammonium or of a compound containing a tertiary amino group. The acids are obtained by the free radical addition of 1 mole of acetic anhydride to olefins containing 20 or more carbon atoms in the presence of a trivalent manganese compound.
