  • Patent number: 7035658
Abstract: A wireless communication device facilitated by a network controller and corresponding methods select a list of requested groups for affiliation from a list of associated groups. The list of requested groups is sent to a network infrastructure where it is processed according to a set of rules. A final list of groups for affiliation is made and the network infrastructure is configured to support the affiliated groups. The list of affiliated groups may also be sent to the wireless communication device.

  • Patent number: 6707829
Abstract: A telephony system 10 having automatic timing adjustment for diverse routing of HFC systems has a signal stream routing through a signal line loop between a head-end 120 and at least one communication unit 16, i.e., a cable modem cable access unit (CAU). If a fault occurs within the signal line loop, recognized by the head-end 120 when a short uplink burst from the communication unit 16 does not align within a predetermined timing window based on a value in the database, the head-end will adjust the cycle through predetermined delay parameters, corresponding to various alternate signal line loops made up of redundant signal lines. An information processor is provided at the head-end 120 of the HFC system 10 for automatically adjusting the timing of the signal stream in order to maintain the database determined at the information processor at the head-end 120. The timing adjustment of the signal stream is communicated between the head-end 120 and the communication units, CAUs 16.

  • Patent number: 6640109
Abstract: To address the need to provide interurban dispatch services, embodiments supporting an interurban dispatch group call service are disclosed. Call control in the controlling network equipment (e.g., 110-131) manages the dispatch service in both the local urban area (101) and the remote urban areas (151). Call flow embodiments that enable this management of group call service across urban area boundaries are described in detail.

  • Patent number: 6381466
Abstract: A trunked wireless communication system (200) includes communication sites (220, 230, 240, 250), communication signal voters (214, 215), and a signal switch (216) intercoupled between the communication signal voters (214, 215) and the communication sites (220, 230, 240, 250). Each of the communication sites (220, 230, 240,250) has selective trunked access to a signal voter (214, 215), thus providing flexibility in the operation of the wireless communication system (200). In a particular operation mode, the wireless communication system (200) can selectively route signals between the voters (214, 215) and communication sites (220, 230, 240, 250) to promote efficient reuse of communication resources.

  • Patent number: 5987331
Abstract: A method and apparatus of linking communication systems of different types. Call requests are directed from a sourcing communication unit in a first communication system (101) to a gateway (114), which translates identity and call type information from the first system to at least one other system (113). Next, the gateway requests radio frequency (RF) resources from each system to support the call. After sufficient RF resources have been received, and prior to the sourcing communication unit starting a call, the gateway (114) issues call start information to each of the communication systems (101, 113). Then, the gateway (114) is operable to receive and translate a message payload from the sourcing communication unit and distribute the translated message payload to communication units in the at least one other system.

  • Patent number: 5513378
Abstract: In a trunked communication system with a number of repeaters (101, 103, 105, 107), allocation of communication resources within each coverage area is controlled by one of the repeaters, which acts as an active resource controller. Communication resource control information is distributed between the repeaters via a data network (109). When a break (113) is detected (403) in the data network (109), a secondary communication unit (117) sends a notice of the break (405) to the plurality of repeaters located on each side of the break. The active resource controller determines which side of the break provides desired usage of the communication resources, and communications are maintained by that side (505, 509).

  • Patent number: 5485462
Abstract: The present invention encompasses a method of facilitating an audio source change in a digital radio communication system (100). A typical system includes a plurality of audio source units ( 101-103), a plurality of audio destination units (105, 106), and a switching unit (108) for rendering one of the plurality of audio source units (101-103) operable. Upon receipt (302) of an information-bearing frame from an audio source unit, a frame sequence value is identified (304). The expected frame sequence value is then determined (306), and this value is compared to the identified frame sequence value to determine whether or not the received frame sequence value matches the expected frame sequence value. When the frame sequence values match, it is assumed that the frames were sourced from the same audio source unit (i.e., no source change has occurred).

  • Patent number: 5335350
Abstract: In a communication system network, an operator station, for a particular communication group, may select communication systems wherein a communication group service will be performed for the particular communication group. This is accomplished when the operator station selects, for the particular communication group, the group service to be performed and which communication systems the service is to be performed in. Once these parameters are selected, the operator station transmits them to the central controller which determines whether at least one communication unit of the particular communication group is registered in the selected communication systems. When at least one communication unit of the particular communication group is registered in the selected communication systems, the central controller allocates a communication resource in the selected communication system to the operator when a communication resource is available such that the selected communication group service can be performed.

  • Patent number: 5101502
Abstract: A typical multi-site trunked communication system comprises communication units that are arranged into talk groups, communication resources distributed among communication sites, and a communication resource allocator. In such a system, a methodology is incorporated that allows communication units to override communication site busy conditions, where the communication site busy conditions prohibits placement of group calls until all communication sites have an available communication resource. The communication site busy condition may be overridden by a communication unit by initiating a busy override signal. Once the busy override signal is initiated, the communication resource allocator allocates, in each site, a communication resource to the communication group of the requesting communication unit.
