Patent number: 10391535Abstract: A process for making a shaped-part from a heat-treatable aluminum alloy blank comprises providing the blank in a hardened temper state, for instance the T6 or another suitable temper state. The as-provided blank is subjected to selective heating, such that a first portion of the blank is heated to a predetermined first temperature for a predetermined first length of time and a second portion of the blank is heated to a predetermined second temperature for a predetermined second length of time. The heated blank is then formed into the desired shape of the shaped-part, and is cooled to ambient temperature. The selective heating substantially increases ductility to facilitate forming of the blank into the desired shape of the shaped part, and provides desired mechanical properties within first and second portions of the shaped part corresponding to the first and second portions of the blank.Type: GrantFiled: July 8, 2014Date of Patent: August 27, 2019Assignee: Magna International Inc.Inventors: Boris Shulkin, Maximilian Amtmann, William A. Kokosza, Aldo Van Gelder

Publication number: 20160001340Abstract: A sheet metal blank for superplastic forming has, on one side thereof, a first surface region having a coating of a lubricant material of a substantially uniform thickness. The blank also has a second surface region that is one of i) substantially devoid of a coating of the lubricant material and ii) coated with a coating of the lubricant material having a thickness that decreases progressively to a minimum thickness less than the substantially uniform thickness. A third surface region is disposed between the first surface region and the second surface region, the third surface region having a coating of the lubricant material of a thickness that decreases progressively in a direction from the first surface region to the second surface region. In particular, the second surface region is a region of the sheet metal blank that contacts a sharp character line of a forming die during superplastic forming.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 17, 2015Publication date: January 7, 2016Inventors: Boris SHULKIN, William A. KOKOSZA, Maximillian AMTMANN

Patent number: 9156079Abstract: The invention is directed to a system and method of applying a coating of lubricant material to the surface of a sheet metal blank in a controlled manner such that some areas of the blank have uniform thickness of lubricant while other areas have no lubricant at all or have a variable amount (progressively increasing or decreasing) of lubricant. This is achieved through the use of a mask template that comprises an overspray fence and at least one contact element. The lubricated coated sheet metal blank is utile for superplastic forming to produce specialized complex shaped parts. The invention advantageously lessens the possibility of skid or slip lines appearing in the finished product as well as lessens the likely build-up of lubricant in forming dies—easing maintenance requirements.Type: GrantFiled: December 16, 2011Date of Patent: October 13, 2015Assignee: MAGNA INTERNATIONAL INC.Inventors: Boris Shulkin, William A. Kokosza, Maximillian Amtmann

Patent number: 9061338Abstract: An apparatus and method are provided for the simultaneous forming of a plurality of shaped articles from plural sheet metal blanks. First and second sheet metal blanks are arranged between upper and lower forming dies, and a nozzle body having a generally diamond-shaped cross-sectional profile, transverse to an insertion direction, is inserted between the sheet metal blanks. When the forming tool is closed, upper and lower sealing surfaces of the nozzle body press the first and second sheet metal blanks, respectively, against sealing beads that are arranged one each within peripheral areas of the upper and lower forming dies. Opposite side edges of the nozzle body converge one toward the other so as to facilitate forming a seal along each of the side edges of the nozzle body. A pressurized fluid is introduced via the nozzle body for forming the sheet metal blanks within a die cavity.Type: GrantFiled: December 16, 2011Date of Patent: June 23, 2015Assignee: MAGNA INTERNATIONAL INC.Inventors: Boris Shulkin, William A. Patent number: 8919164Abstract: A forming tool apparatus is provided for forming an article having a negative draft angle that locks the formed article within the forming tool. An insert, which is disposed within a recess defined in a forming surface of the forming tool, has a surface that cooperates with the forming surface of the forming tool to shape a metal blank into a desired final shape. In particular, the surface of the insert is shaped to define the negative draft angle feature of the formed article. Subsequent to forming the article, a linear-drive mechanism is activated to withdraw the insert away from the formed article, and thereby unlock the formed article from the tool. The formed article is then extracted from the tool along an extraction direction that is other than parallel to the direction along which the insert is driven.Type: GrantFiled: August 17, 2012Date of Patent: December 30, 2014Assignee: Magna International Inc.Inventors: Boris Shulkin, William A.
