  • Publication number: 20070134644
Abstract: The present invention provides a learning environment that presents information in an organized fashion with defined objectives using an extension of current 3D online technology. By combining 3D virtual space technology with additional asynchronous and synchronous communications features, a content rich learning environment can be created that allows students more realistic interactions than those provided by currently deployed systems. In addition, the system allows for the overlay and integration of 2D, text-based, and audio-based learning tools both within and outside the 3D environment and provides an interface with convergence technology such as cell phones, pagers, hand held computers, etc as well as collaborative tools such as presentation of overheads, computer software slide presentations such as MICROSOFT POWERPOINT, whiteboard, virtual network computing (VNC), and for class lectures, whiteboard, virtual network computing (VNC), and other collaborative tools layered into the 3D environment.

  • Publication number: 20070086885
Abstract: A bleed valve assembly for discharging bleed air into a gas turbine engine bypass plenum includes a bleed flow duct, a bleed valve, and a flow deflector. The bleed flow duct is contoured such that it delivers uniformly flowing bleed air to the flow deflector when the bleed valve is in the open position. The flow deflector has a plurality of openings formed therein. Each opening fluidly communicates the bleed air flow passage with the bypass plenum and is oriented at a discharge angle such that bleed air is discharged from each opening in a direction that does not have a vector component in the direction in which air is flowing in the bypass plenum.

  • Patent number: 7013678
Abstract: A GRIN fiber lens is fabricated by the steps of providing a graded index glass preform, thinning the graded index preform to remove a sufficient thickness of the graded glass to establish a desired ?n, and drawing a graded index optical fiber from the thinned graded index preform. Thinning, in this context, refers to removal of graded index glass from the outside of the graded index preform so as to reduce its outer diameter. The thinning thus changes ?n which is the refractive index difference between the center of the preform and its outer surface. The graded index preform can be provided by MCVD deposition followed by removal of the starting tube glass, by OVD deposition, by VAD, or by ion exchange fabrication. The thinned graded index preform is advantageously annealed before drawing in order to minimize ripple. And, in a variation of the process, an overcladding can be applied over the thinned graded preform before draw for further adjustment or control of the ?n.

  • Publication number: 20050205382
Abstract: The present invention relates to a torsional damper for an electrically-variable transmission. The torsional damper is equipped with a hydraulically actuable lock-out clutch to directly couple the engine to the input shaft of the transmission. The electric motors provided with the electrically-variable transmission can serve to effectively cancel out engine compression pulses when the springs of the torsional damper are locked out. When the engine is off and the torsional damper assembly is in use, an auxiliary pump is provided to pump oil to the torsional damper assembly. The lock-out clutch is hydraulically balanced by the oil supplied by the auxiliary pump. The pump is strategically mounted to the transmission housing in a manner to minimize the distance between the auxiliary pump and the transmission without affecting any vehicle ground clearance requirements.
