Patent number: 7704627Abstract: Electrolysis cell comprises, in one embodiment, a proton exchange membrane (PEM), an anode positioned along one face of the PEM, and a cathode positioned along the other face of the PEM. An electrically-conductive, compressible, spring-like, porous pad for defining a fluid cavity is placed in contact with the outer face of the cathode. The porous pad comprises a mat of carbon fibers bound together with one or more, preferably thermoplastic, resins, the mat having a density of about 0.2-1.5 g/cm3. Cell frames are placed in peripheral contact with the metal screen and the compression pad for peripherally containing fluids present therewithin. Electrically-conductive separators are placed in contact with the metal screen and the compression pad for axially containing fluids present therewithin. A plurality of the cells may be arranged in series in a bipolar configuration without requiring a separate compression pad between cells (for gas pressure differentials up to about 400 psi or greater).Type: GrantFiled: October 20, 2008Date of Patent: April 27, 2010Assignee: Giner Electrochemical Systems, LLCInventors: Anthony B. LaConti, William A. Titterington, Larry L. Swette, Ricardo Leon, Kwang S. Kim

Patent number: 6464846Abstract: Electrically-conductive compression pad suitable for use in an electrolysis cell stack. In a preferred embodiment, the electrically-conductive compression pad comprises a single sheet of electrically-conductive material, such as a metal. The electrically-conductive sheet has a top surface and a bottom surface and is bent upwardly and downwardly in a step-wise fashion to form an alternating pattern of parallel ribs and channels, the alternating pattern extending across the entirety of the sheet and being reversed on the bottom surface of the sheet. The pad also comprises a plurality of elastomeric strips, each strip being positioned within a corresponding channel and being secured to the sheet by an adhesive. The strips are preferably dimensioned and made of an appropriately compressible material so that, when the pad is compressed, the strips expand laterally to fill their respective channels and lie flush with their adjacent ribs.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 2000Date of Patent: October 15, 2002Assignee: Giner Electrochemical Systems, LLCInventor: William A. Patent number: 5316644Abstract: An electrochemical cell electrode plate includes a laminar and preferably laminated assembly of at least two substantially identically configured plate-shaped components of an electrically conductive high-strength material, each including a fluid-pervious central portion and a solid frame portion integral with and surrounding the central portion. At least one through aperture is provided in the frame portion and forms a continuous fluid-flow conduit with the corresponding aperture of the other component. The frame portion of each of the components has at least one channel therein that is situated between the aperture and the central portion and opens onto the first major surface. The channels of the two components may be constituted by interrupted rows of mutually staggered slots that complement each other into a continuous passage that establishes communication between the aperture and at least one of the spaces of the central portion of one of the components.Type: GrantFiled: June 19, 1992Date of Patent: May 31, 1994Assignee: United Technologies CorporationInventors: William A.
