Abstract: A locking plier tool, for clamping onto a workpiece of any size within the expanse of the tool's open jaws, has a thumb-actuated control member on the tool body and a release lever which facilitate, respectively, workpiece pressure adjustment and tool release by one hand of the operator manipulating the tool. A semiautomatic means for adjusting the tool's clamping pressure is also disclosed.

Abstract: A plier tool for single-handed manipulation to automatically adjust the tool jaws to positions of positive gripping and holding of any size workpiece within the jaw range has major body members constructed from laminations, providing a tool capable of exerting a balanced force on a workpiece. The construction of the tool also lends itself to automated and relatively inexpensive production and enables the user to quickly replace springs necessary for the function of the tool without requiring complete tool disassembly.

Abstract: A self-adjusting tool having first and second elongated members, each of which have a workend and an oppositely located handle means for applying force to the tool. The first member includes a raceway positioned intermediate of the work end and handle. A connector is provided adjacent to the work ends for slideably and pivotally connecting the first and second members together. The connector includes an elongated slot in the first member having ratchet teeth along at least a portion of one edge thereof and a pawl positioned to slide within the slot and to pivotally engage the ratchet teeth. A fastener for securing the first and second members slideably together and securing the pawl in the slot is provided as part of the connector. A torsion arm with first and second ends is operably positioned between the first and second members. The first end includes a torsion element connected to the second member and the second end is slideably positioned within the raceway.

Abstract: In a plier-type tool having the capability to automatically slidably adjust, in response to manual closing of its handle ends, to the size of any workpiece or other item to be gripped which is within the size range defined by the maximum opening between the tool jaws, certain structural and functional improvements are provided which are intended to simplify and reduce the costs of manufacturing of the tool and to enhance its appearance and performance.
