  • Publication number: 20060089170
Abstract: A hand-held wireless communications device operates in a communications mode and a stereo mode. The device comprises a housing, a long-range transceiver within the housing to communicate with a base station in the communications mode, and a receiver within the housing to receive radio signals from a broadcast radio station when the device is in the stereo mode. The broadcast radio station may transmit, for example, AM or FM signals to the and-held device. A controller within the housing generates control signals to place the device in the communications mode and the stereo mode, and selectively controls a plurality of speakers to render audio signals as audible sound. The plurality of speakers includes a pair of longitudinally-spaced speakers disposed opposite each other on the housing of the hand-held device.

  • Publication number: 20060068722
Abstract: A wireless communications device has an audio transducer to facilitate communications via a wireless communications network. The audio transducer is disposed on an extendable member that is positionable in a retracted position and an extended position. When the extendable member is in the retracted position, the audio transducer is positioned internal to the housing of the wireless communications device. When the extendable member is in the extended position, the audio transducer is positioned external to the housing of the wireless communications device. An extension mechanism disposed within the housing of the wireless communications device extends the extendable member and moves the audio transducer from the retracted position within the housing to the extended position external to the housing responsive to the activation of an actuator.

  • Publication number: 20060052109
Abstract: A method and apparatus for executing a pre-defined function responsive to user-generated motion is described herein. In exemplary embodiments, executing the pre-defined functions includes implementing a random chance game, answering an incoming call, terminating a call, initiating a call with a user-specified recipient, powering up the wireless communication device, activating a desired operating mode or feature associated with the wireless communication device, etc. In some exemplary embodiments, the wireless communication device may also determine one or more characteristics of the detected motion, and execute a specific function based on the determined characteristics.
