Patent number: 4840269Abstract: A conveyor having a series of pans mounted on chain links with the leading and trailing edges of the pans overlapping. The trailing edge of each pan has a stiffened transverse arcuate based contacted by the front corner of a transverse arcuate front bead on the rearwardly adjacent pan under all operating conditions. The shape of the beads causes the front bead to deflect and self bias into contact. End plates are welded to the pan except at the front bead from the leading corner to the peak of the arc of the bead. This leaves the front portion free to flex to develop the bias. The end plates are also shaped to develop bias to maintain line contact of the front edge of the end plate on the rear portion of the end plate next ahead. The plates overlap in all operating conditions.Type: GrantFiled: March 28, 1988Date of Patent: June 20, 1989Assignee: Rexnord Inc.Inventor: William B. Anderson

Patent number: 4717862Abstract: A pulsed illuminator projector for reducing the reverberation levels of rected ligh by illuminating a lamp that is pulsed on and off at a specified rate and for a specified time duration. The critical factor is controlling the amount of time the light is on versus amount of time it is off, and the frequency at which the lamp is pulsed on. The pulsed illumination projector device reduces the amount of backscatter from particulate matter such as water, zooplankton, dust, fog and the like which causes a significant amount of light to reflect back toward the source thereby reducing visibility. Backscatter is reduced through the reduction of direct incident light. As the backscatter is reduced, the distance which objects can be detected is increased. Illumination is controlled directly by pulse length and repetition rate. The device is completely portable and can be hand held item as well as mounted on a vehicle and operable in gaseous or liquid atmospheres.Type: GrantFiled: November 19, 1984Date of Patent: January 5, 1988Assignee: The United States Government as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventor: William B. Patent number: 4688669Abstract: A bucket for attachment to the chain in a mill duty bucket elevator, includes a one piece wrapper member bent into a U-shaped trough defined by a sloping front wall, a horizontal bottom wall, an upright rear wall, a forwardly sloping rear wall, and a horizontal top lip. A rectangular hole in the wrapper plate defines the outside edges of a chain channel in which the chain lies when the bucket is fastened to the chain. Four side pieces having identical shapes and outside dimensions lie transversely across the trough to provide two end walls and two inside partitions. The partitions brace the front wall and act as side walls of the chain channel. A back plate fastened to the partitions and to the top lip and bottom wall adjacent the rectangular hole acts as the front face of the chain channel. The top lip, fastened to the two end walls and the two partitions, provides torsional stiffness to the bucket.Type: GrantFiled: February 19, 1985Date of Patent: August 25, 1987Assignee: Rexnord Inc.Inventors: Robert F. Patent number: 4219886Abstract: A multipoint reflective target system for use as sonar targets. The system ncludes a plurality of small spaced apart reflectors that are interconnected by an elongated flexible tether. The tethered reflectors are then towed in the ocean and form an elongated multipoint reflective target comprising a string of spaced apart reflectors moving under and about parallel to the ocean surface. This target is sonified by a sonar pulse and generates a reflected signal having a predetermined shape. The shape of the reflected signal is determined by a selection of parameters such as the length of sonar pulse, the spacing of the reflectors and the size and material of the reflectors. By properly selecting these parameters it is possible for the multipoint reflective target system to resemble much larger actual or similated targets.Type: GrantFiled: October 16, 1978Date of Patent: August 26, 1980Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventor: William B. Patent number: 4187488Abstract: A reverberation backscatter measurement system for providing in situ measment of acoustic backscatter levels from point source scatterers or the target size of individual scatterers within or at the boundaries of the transmitting medium. The volume scattering strength, a calculated value from measured data, is the logarithmic ratio of the reflected intensity to the incident intensity at a unit distance from the acoustic center of the scatterers. The system accurately measures the parameters of volume scattering strength (S) and target strength (TS) and has application in the measurement and determination of sonar system performance and target strengths of vessels and their wakes. It also may be used in fisheries for biological studies in zooplankton population and distribution assessments. A data processing system is also provided to effectively and accurately process reflected signals indicating target strength and scattering strength.Type: GrantFiled: March 20, 1978Date of Patent: February 5, 1980Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: William B.
